Unhappy do you notice a general decline in land cruiser mojo over the years?

I just picked up an FJ-60 and have put a good 700-800 miles on it in the past few days --

-- she's got 238K on the clock, a good body, and an immaculate interior.

It's hard not to notice a general change in the cruisers over the years --

-- my '94 -- I like it, but as I said before, it's like a big camry -- something's just not too sexy about it -- nor does it really feel like a truck --

-- my '91 -- that's what started it -- this is a truck, and feels like one -- the 3FE made it real --

-- the '89 -- here is where i really felt like i had a classic truck -- like something nostalgic --

-- the '87 -- here i realized Toyota has lost something over the years in the functional beauty of these trucks. The 4-speed is like an old friend here, I feel like there's a whole new view of the road looking out her windows, I am amazed that humans could ever engineer and assemble a truck to run 240K miles and still look on the interior still like a show-room.

I don't know -- something seems to be waning here, and the FJ-Cruiser thingie doesn't seem like it's going to break this negative trend.

Toyota built some great old trucks that felt like trucks and that were trucks through and through -- and that seems to changing rapidly.

let me see if I get what you're saying...

87 = rugged, sexy, manly
89 = same as 87, sorta
91 = sexy, but not as manly and rugged
94 = soft, cushy, not sexy

Is that what you're saying, in a nutshell?

what is N-WTF?

bought it from original owner --

-- dude has every fill-up and miles documented --

-- oil changes at 3K since new documented, along with a myriad of new dealer parts, where he dropped it off with an "it won't start" diagnosis --

-- i am happy --

thing is, in about 10-15 more years the 80s will be vintage rides and the 60s will be downright ancient.

My first cruiser experiance was with test driving a few 40's when I wasn't even old enough to drive. I was hooked, but it just wasn't in the cards at the time. Fast forward to the purchase of the 100, then the 80 and I was loving life...until I got around guys with 40's and 60's and realized what I didn't have. I am jonesing for a 60 just like yours condition wise, but I want a BROWN one. Nothing says 80's toyota truck like brown. Maybe after I change jobs I can sneak a 60 past the finance committee(my wife).

All the mojo was gone by the time the FJ40 was introduced.

You're right Eric - there's just something about the old ones. Wait until you get a tractor engine (F) and 3-speed ... you'll be grinning right through that big 'ole steering wheel

Boy Eric-just wait until you take the pits for a ride in a 100 series! There is so little mojo, you'll have to switch to Toy Poodle rescue.

it's just weird, you get in a 60 and say, "damn, these guys knew how to build TRUCKS" --

-- and when you get in a 100, you take a nap --

X2

Once you have driven a 25 off road no other cruiser can compare. Of course this may be a good thing

In stock form I agree, the 100 has zero mojo.

However, a couple of mods like lift, winch, bull bar, exhaust and MTRs can make all the difference.

I have a FJ40 and a Jeep Grand Cherokee. The best of bost worlds to me.

A vehicle that the cruiserheads love and a vehicle that pisses them off.

Reality in the days of having that truck feel are over for new vehicles. We truck lovers are about .0000000001 percent of the mass SUV market. Nobody is going to cater to us. At least the FJ is a step in the right direction. Give it 20 years or so to become old and full of PO mods. I think you might like it.

I left my '60 at my parents place over Thanksgiving because I had a couple of tires blow and no place had 33" BFGs in stock. My old man took it to his mechanic for a tune up (everything was fine, as I could have told him) and this mechanic had never been under a Cruiser before.

When we picked the vehicle up, the guy said "that's the beefiest f*$%&^# 4x4 I've ever seen." It makes a man feel good when his mostly stock ride can elicit a comment like that from a dude who makes his livin' working on cars. I don't think an 80 or 100 would get that comment

An 80 might. It's even beefier than a 60, and the squared off front axle housing looks huge, even though we all know it has a smaller diff.

25s and 40's == 100% mojo
55s == 95% mojo
60s == 85% mojo
62s == 75% mojo
70s == 90% mojo
80s == 65% mojo
100s == 40% mojo
FJCruiser == 5% mojo (bezel)

All I can tell you is that every knucklenut I talk to about my truck calls it an SUV. IT'S NOT AN SUV DAMNIT!!

SUV = built primarily for city driving, with 4WD as a secondary function (or afterthought, in Ford's case)

truck = either a pickup, or a 4x4 build PRIMARILY AS A 4x4.

Okay done ranting.

YAH BABY!!!

The 55 has gobs of mojo.

If you define mojo as "character". It's got character like an old brit bike. I wouldn't loan it to anybody 'cause nobody I know could drive the thing without an hour of instruction.

If you define mojo as attractive to women, the 55 is lacking a bit, but what the Hell do they know.
