what is up with this?

I just want to post up to share an experience relating to my search for a JDM import. I emailed Eric at www.hj61.com. I asked him to provide a few basic details regarding the vehicles he has for sale and answer a few basic questions regarding the maintenance and services he provides and his experience with land cruisers. He declined to answer my questions via email and asked that we speak on the phone. I politely responded that I would like to have a record of his answers to my questions and that I would discuss the possible purchase of a vehicle on the phone with him after he had answered my preliminary round of questions and I had had a chance to decide whether or not to proceed further in my dealings with him.

Is that unreasonable on my part?

This was his email response in its entirety:

I suspect that you are not a legimate purchasor.

What is that? Neither Louis (Adventure Imports), Marko (Outback), Wayne (Luxury Imports), Michael (Rising Sun) or Barry (Mustang Imports) have taken issue with answering a few basic questions via email and not one of them has had the audacity to accuse me of not being a "legitimate purchaser" simply because I wanted a few basic questions answered via email.

I don't know what anyone else's experience has been with Eric at HJ61.COM but I for one am offended by what I take to be his blatant lack of professionalism in accusing me of not being a "legitimate purchaser".

I told him that I do not appreciate his absurd accusation and that I would share this experience with others.

Now he has just threatened me if I share my experience on this forum and say anything untrue about him. Here is his email in its entirety:

If you say something untrue about me, that is meant to cause my reputation harm ...you will be commiting "slander".
You don't want to go there.

What is this guy's problem? Am I at fault here in any way for being a cautious and prudent shopper?

I don't doubt that these import dealers have to deal with insincere inquiries all the time, but hey, they're selling vehicles - it comes with the territory. In my mind, if you want to be in the business, you have to accept the fact that not everyone is actually going to buy.

And never tell someone they're not legitimate. That is just plain offensive.

Peter

Based on what you've shared it sounds like Eric has a problem. A sale must not be that important to him.

the internet is full of goof jerk idiots.

i never do any purchasing over the internet.

id rather look you in the eye while i ask you a question.

internet questions that can be recorded for your "purposes" are seen as a form of entrapment wich is precisely the manner in wich you used them on this board.rounds of questioning? are you a lawyer.. is he on trial?

go meet the guy in person and forget this ever happened if you want to buy a truck. nobody wants to reply to e mails so that you can post them and make a big bullshit goose chase out of his business when the antifreeze cracks your block because there isnt any sub zero temps in parts of japan, and the liability trail you need to "expose to everyone on the internet" the horrific nature in wich you were screwed by your own lack of common sense. get your mechanic, go look at the truck. dont piss around with emails its a waste of time.

There is no address or contact information on the website. I think I'd be a bit worried about dealing with this guy. It seems like he has something to hide.

I'd avoid.

If he can't be bothered to do his job and answer potential customers questions, then I'd suggest taking your business elsewhere.

Friend of the family sells cars (Lexus and Acura) for a living. Gets a lot of kids from the college down test driving cars they clearly can't afford. He treats them exactly like he does repeat customers who buy a new Lexus every year. Why waste time? Cause one day, that kid will graduate college and be able to afford something, and he's a potential customer from that day forward, and it's hoped he'll remember the treatment he got. It's worth mentioning that this guy is "salesperson of the month" practically every month, even though he "wastes time" with unqualified buyers. IN the 10 years I've known him, he's not made that honor only about twice that I can recall.

So, he doesn't think you're a legitimate buyer? That's OK, it seems he has a lot to learn about being a legitimate seller.

Fred

Hawke's grammar is good.

I answer plenty of questions via email when I sell a vehicle or misc "stuff". Craigslist would suck w/out the convenience of email. No problems yt!

whatever you say grammar sniper, anyhow dealing with my grammar is much easier than admitting that being too overbearing while buying a used vehicle is kind of wierd.

There's nothing on the HJ61 site except email links.

You would think a guy who puts 5 "email me" links on his web site could at least answer a few questions about the trucks he is advertising.

I'd stay away from that one... You gave him a chance - he doesn't want your business.

Rocky

hummm, so i should not be answering emailed questions? sorry, i do not know any honest importer that is afraid of answering emails. this is the only way some buyers like to test out the knowledge of the importer.
Eric has been around for a number of years. do a search and you will find out some more.
i bought a parts truck off him a few years back that was exactly what i expected it to be.
i think it is best to investigate anyone you are about to invest money with.
although with this kind of response to a potential customer, i know i wouldn't buy from this kind of attitude.
Eric, relax, not everyone is trying to get you in trouble.
cheers

i would like to ask you some questions Hawke, about the grammar services you offer, your experiences with english, but i dont want to talk to you on the phone, id like to talk to you over e mail, so i can have a record of your replies. we can talk on the phone after my preliminary round of questions and whether or not i decide to deal with you further.

cmon now.. isnt that a bit odd to write?
if i wanted grammar lessons from you, id rather meet you than being all wierd and recording personal answers and then posting them

Wouldn't it be libel, since it's written?

Not odd at all if he advertised his services on the internet, and included an email address for you to correspond with.

You must be new to the internet, I have agreed to terms to buy and sell vehicles entirely by email, I have done this at least four times, always contingent on meeting and inspecting.

All details about maintenance, service, sale price, etc. were agreed to, before I ever spoke to anyone. Sure makes it easy. Meet up, inspect to make sure vehicle is as the seller stated, no negotiating, as that is already done, exchange money for a title, done.

hahah yeah exactly! the word gets out! personally i think the guy felt badgered, i know i would, call me come meet me, buy the truck. i can see why this guy thought it wasnt a legitimate purchasor. Im glad you can buy things off of the internet, the only thing i have ever done with an email concerning buying a vehicle is get a phone number. and thats the way it will stay. as for being new to the internet, i was using TCP/IP with ax.25 in the 1980's. i am therefore one of the first people on the internet as a HAM. Canadian Hams played a part in designing the internet protocol to what it is today from its former national defence / university roots.

used cars = buyer beware, go see the truck, anyone can lie in an email. why not avoid that and go see it in person. i can see what youre saying about having a record.. but treating the guy like hes under extreme scrutiny straight off is a liitle rude. i would have said the same thing. talk to me come see it. you want a guarantee, take it to your mechanic. the ONLY problem is when the guy wont let you take it to a mechanic, drive it, or have the service records. if you exchange money on someones word over the internet i find that laughable. even if he writes you the most honest email in the world, its not admissable. be realistic, you buy a car when you look at it in person.

Dude, don't buy into the Canadian conspiracy about you guys creating the internet. That all just a bunch of Canuckian Socialist propaganda, created from spending too many cold winters drinking Molsons. Everyone knows that Al Gore created the internet.

Customers can be so annoying... I mean, can't they just hand over a shitpot of money without asking all these annoying questions? Or having all these ridiculous expectations of someone taking time to be a good salesperson....

I mean Christ, man... If you want someone to answer your questions and provide good customer service via Email, go someplace else!

i don't think eric is limiting himself to people close enough to come look at the truck. plus by choosing to sell specialty landcruisers he chooses to deal with anal detail oriented buyers, not your average guy who walks in off the street looking for a deal on a used camry.

so basically, if he can't handle migs he should not fly down mig alley.
