Paris-Dakar: Mitsubishi takes the overall win

Mitsubishi Pajero (Montero) Evolution wins overall.

Rally was cancelled/finished after SS14 because of fatal spectator accidents at SS13 and SS14.

Toyota placed 22nd and 26th overall, but I couldn't find out if that was good enough to claim 1st and 2nd in their group/category yet.

But I see that Nissan pick-up and the BMWX3 and X5 placed higher than the LC (Again, don't know if they are in the same group/category).

AWESOME footages:

Makes me really appreciate/respect what they do, whether for a living or just for the fun of it.

I'm starting to think this is indeed a seriously hard race, hype aside.

I do hope they have the big guys with crews and the "private party" racers in different categories, though. I have much more respect for the latter...

the stock names on the cars don't mean much, sadly. Gordon's H3 didn't exactly look much like an H3, did it....

Me as well. While they advertise it as the "world's toughest race" I thought it might be all hype. But it truly is amazing, and I have just become aware of it over the past few years.....

And as a NASCAR fan, I'll agree whole heartedly about the names on the cars. Just fluff for the most part.

I'd like to see classes in the DAKAR (maybe there is?) and in all forms of racing (NASCAR) that get back to true factory parts...but that is just a dream....

That footage is awsome! On leg 11 at about 2min in there is a yellow FJ40 or 45. Thier support trucks are awsome, those things look like tanks.

I'll have to check the website but I know a 100 series was leading the stock class on stage 10 or 11...

It's good to hear that the X5's are improving. In years past, they went through prop shafts and drive axles like Noah goes through socks.

There is a Production Class category in the race that consists of the trucks that you and I can buy, with limited aftermarket mods. There were plenty of Land Cruisers, esp. Prados in this year's race. Unfortunately, the coverage of the Production Class is limited to spectacular crashes and the odd random sighting.

That's a 45-bodied 90 or 100 series. Now a real 40 series would be fun

Here is the top 30 finishers for the CARS:

The first time is total time, the second time is time behind the overall leader, and the third time is penalty time.

There are basically two kinds of vehicles. Production class and Modified. There are also factory and sponsor supported teams and amateur teams with little support.

Team Toyota Auto Body finished in the #17, #22, and #26 spots overall. The #351 HDJ100 won the #1 spot in the production diesel and production overall while the #344 HDJ100 took the #2 spot in the production diesel and production overall.

Not only did Team Toyota Auto Body finish #1 and #2 in their production class, they soundly whipped a bunch of highly modified race cars in their stock vehicles

The #338 HDJ100 which finished #26 overall was disqualified from consideration in the production class due to a broken rear differential which had to be repaired by the support vehicle. Some sort of rule came into play that I don't fully understand but they still finished the race.
