Energy Industry Questions

I am a senior at Baylor University, and will be graduating this December with a BBA. I would like to land an entry level position in the energy industry. Are any of you active in energy? If so, is your company hiring, and do you have any advice for getting started in the industry?

I worked this past summer for Trinity Coal Partners, LLP, and really enjoyed it. I worked at 5 different mines (surface and deep) and at the central office. I really enjoyed the mix of office and on site work. My primary responsibility was to develop and implement comprehensive coal quality and customer based production and delivery models.

Thanks for any information.

-Matt

So you want to live in Houston, huh?

In case you don't, my old firm is in Oil, Gas and petrochem/chem consulting and design, and is not located in Houston.

They specialize in refineries, chemical plants, offshore rigs, pipelines and such.

I might be able to place a call to see if they're looking. It might take a few weeks, cause I hear they're having some problems in New Orleans and Mobile right now.

I'm in the oil business, but in a real small firm. We're not hiring, but I keep reading stuff about a "generational glut" in the oil and gas business from all the people that have left the industry over the last 20 years.

Sample: "Natural Gas Week" which landed on my desk this morning.
Efforts Under Way to Address Energy Industry Worker Shortage
"The current manpower shortage in the energy industry is a crisis and it's one that was 20 years in the making, And it's also one that won't be solved overnight."..

"We're facing a very serious situation--without these trained people in all levels--you can't drill new wells and you can't explore for new reserves."
If I were a young guy starting out I'd head to the Rocky Mountains and get into some of the gas plays in Wyoming and Montana. That way you can have all places to explore in your Cruiser when you're not working.

Most of the people I know who have made a lot of money have worked for smaller companies and got a piece of the action or invested in deals on the side.
