Driving slow isn't her issue. She sits way to close to the steering wheel and I'm trying to break her of that habbit so I teel her she drives like a grandma.

I find I also drive slow. A 2F will do that to a person.

That's a STRANGE little pile up.

Glad everything worked out all right. I tend not to question the "young chick in that Lexus"...because you get the picture 10 fold when you see a wreck like that......it definitely could've sucked a LOT more.

And AIR BAGS are interesting....in my 04 Duramax [fairly new, right?] I hit the back end of a Toyota Minivan that was driven off the road right in front of me....I hit that van doing over 50....ALL but head on.......NO airbags. I was VERY glad though.......because AIR BAGS HURT from what I've heard. We didn't need them at all.

Just don't smash up the Runner Rachel.

Steering wheel advice from a distant uncle, Rachel.

Do not crowd the steering wheel. The minimum safe distance from a "pillow-equipped" steering wheel is 10 inches. Any closer than that and you risk additional injury from the airbag when it decides it's time to join the party.

Rachel? All this time I thought that was just the pet name of your new 4Runner

Glad you ok too...just look at this one as a primer for next time. Hopefully that will never come, but at least here you were able to go thru many of the motions without the added stress of being at fault or hurt etc. Can happen to the best of us ..

Now about the steering wheel proximity to your driving position. something just came to mind .. not sure if this applies or not.

I have a lady friend who can never come out to play when she is left with only her husbands truck to drive. She's just too damn petite to reach the pedals comfortably. I have no idea how talk you are, but is that part of the problem? Don't laugh, but she has joked about adding blocks to the pedals to really feel safe driving the thing.

Probably better if you are seated back in the seat, without so much slack in the seat beat ... unlike 'exhibit 'A'' ..

hahah im only 5'4 and i can't even help sitting as far up as possible, otherwise i can't see anything!
it was like a joke that i drove so close, but yesterday i watched all the airbags go off except mine and it scared me cuz im about 2 inches away and would have suffered some bad injuries....
definetly a lot easier in my 4runner (which is hopefully done today, latest tomorrow thanks to Oleg!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
next picture instead of me in my old woman position in the lx i'll be leaning way back with one hand on top of the wheel in my 4runner

Glad your ok Rachel. How bout out pic of your pimp position with the seat all the way back in couch mode and one hand on the bottom of the wheel

Reminds me of my friends wife when I see her in his 911. Seat all the way up and can barely see over the wheel

Yea getting hit by air bag hurts anyway, its gonna hurt even worse if you are on top of it when it explodes.

I was trying to make you feel better about driving slow, but I am ~6'5" so I can't say I sit anywhere near the steering wheel... damn grandma!

It's funny how much we take for granted the mods we do to the vehicles. Yeah, many are for looks, more are for functionality "OFF" road, but we often forget the added safety ON road. It sometimes takes something drastic for loved ones to understand that... Personally, I think bumpers and a GOOD set of sliders are very important safety items for vehicles...

Glad you're okay, Rachel...

Glad everyone is ok!

Armor is awesome, I was in 2 different accidents in my old Jeep and the armor saved me from any damage in both. One involved backing into an Audi causing $1500 worth of damage to the trunk, and not a scratch on my rear bumper(my fault, damn tire carrier blocked my view out the back). The other involved my mom backing her Benz into my bullbar in the driveway(she can be a bit absent minded sometimes, but I still can't figure out how she didn't see my Jeep RIGHT behind her car). Ended up needing a whole new trunklid to the tune of $2000 and not a scratch on the bullbar.

Need to get some armor for the 80...

Oh, and rachel, the 'runner looks great. You're a lucky girl, and it sounds like you're aware of it and thankful. Very refreshing to see young people who are appreciative, too many just don't care. Damn, I sound like an old man...I'm only 21! LOL

Airbag story ala daughter of romers seating position. A paramedic freind responded to a traffic accident. Get to the first car and observes a very disorriented woman drive covered in blood. Vitals ok, semi lucid and claiming no real injuries. He points out that she is covered in blood and she starts screaming for her ankle bighter dog. Turns out the space between the wheel and her was previously occupied by her pup who was now in multiple pieces.

more americans end up with broken arms when an airbag goes off than in eroupeans(sp?)...cause we always cross our arms over the center line of the wheel...EU are taught not to and fail their driving test if they do....gotta love the shuffle steer...mucho faster than hand over hand too.

In US if we speed during our test, we fail, but do you think we no longer speed once the test is over?

OMG! i try to bring the kennel in the car whenever i drive with my puppy, but she loves to always be in my lap.... i'm aware of how dangerous holding her can be, but that picture in my mind will make me feel so much better about leaving her to whine in her kennel!!!

it could also be because US spec Airbags are more violent too, due to a high rate of americans not wearing seatbelts (so airbags are uprated to primary restraints, instead of secondary for those countries that wear seatbelts)
