| What do you really like about your 80 series Land Cruiser? threads that many start are usualy started because a person is having a problem with their Land Cruiser. so, to twist things around a little bit, what are some things that you really like about your land cruiser? |

| I like that fact that 99.999% of all 80-series owners are smart enuf to start chatty threads in the ChitChat corner and not in the Tech sections.

| 1. Factory Lockers
They are very underrated in my opinion. Their activation mechanism is so cool, compared to disco's anyways. It is all wierd in a discovery, not a nice little electronic switch; I guess the word for it is manual, which some prefer. But for my mall cruiser, I want electric, and I want to be able to lock it not moving and in hi.
2. The "over-builtness"
The car is a tank. Yes, tanks are expensive to repair. But, how often does it break down? Every once in a while you will get hit with an expensive part, but how often are you dropping 2 Gs on a transmission rebuilt? Or t-case? My friend has got a 91 his older brother ran for so long with out changing the oil it thing siezed up. It is still running strong today with 200k+. Try doing that in a chevy. Another factor, the stock breather extensions are quite adequate in my opinion, and save 16 year olds with new cruisers from doing damage mudding.(I screwed up my tahoe)
3. The solid axle/coil suspension
In an age when IFS rules the market, what more could you ask for than fj-80 axles and a 3-link up front and 5-link rear? Ok, Toyota should have used a 5-link up front, but we can't have everything. Lower shock mounts that aren't half way between the differential are nice too. Also, for a birfield style knuckle, the 80 birfield is superior. Most people recommend 33-35" for mini birfield, but it seems like you can run 37-38s just fine with out major breakage, on a car that weighs 2,000 more and has fr/rr lockers.
What I don't like, just for fun...
1. 3-link up front
Maybe someone can explain why Toyota choose this option, but the front suspesion so clearly limits downwards travel. Why not throw in a 5 linker?
2. Plastic bumpers
I think the bumpers are kinda weak. I got hit by someone going 40 in my tahoe from behind and the bumper didnt have a dent in it, no joke. I have already had to replace the front bumper do to damage, and the rear bumper is dented well. Thank god for the tow hitch.
That is about it.

| I like how much it cost - it was free!
And how little it takes to fuel it - I put garbage in a blender on top of the reactor. God only knows what happens when I hit 88 mph

| As out of place as this thread is....i still couldnt wait to get in here and get my opinion up but its seems that WB1948 has aleady done it for me. I think he hit the nail on the head, just perfectly. They are amazingly well built trucks, extremely capable even in stock form and one of the most important elements of all, they have stood the test of time, and done it with grace.
When i take people around in my 80 they are all often shocked to here the rig is 11 years old and pushing 250k miles and almost completely stock, original everything....something i think many SUV's cannot say.

I think we have a winner in the "Exaggerator of the Week" contest. Unless you were going 39.78899 miles per hour when struck.

DougM | Yea that is kinda hard to believe man. He is right though, i must say i think or front bumpers are slightly underbuilt, i have replaced mine twice now...ARB here we come, i hope sometime soon atleast.

| I love the reliabilty and ability to do just about anything you ask. The 80 is not the best at alot of things, but when push comes to shove (or you just HAVE to move that gunsafe for a friend TODAY) the 80 almost always gets the job done; not necessarily in the most gracefull manner (tailgate open), but done (moved it).
Not to mention that it is entirely possible to put a jetski in the back
Sure it costs a bit to operate, but I can drive it twice as far as most other cars before having to plunk down alot of $$ for a new car.
And they look all tough and stuff in the GAP parking lot |

| If I had an 80 series truck Id REALLY love the 1HD-FT turbo diesel and R151 five speed transmission that Id have in it.
Then Id like the lockers (because I wouldnt buy one without them, why would anyone)
Then Id dig the 6" Slee suspension that I put on it.
Etc etc etc.
You can see an 80 in my future!

| I like the fact that I can wheel the hell out of it and then drive it in peace and calm and luxury, back home when finished! Very verstile and capable rig! And it is also a very well family orientated vehicle, feels like I am driving a invincible tank with my little bugger and my babe!

| Similar to cc93cruiser:
The same vehicle is a fancy status symbol in Los Angeles and a serious no-nonsense work tool in Queensland. People in one place don't believe me when I explain the perception of the 80 in the other.

| As previously mentioned I like the fact that it's overbuilt, one look under the thing and you know it's not just another "Exploder" er, Explorer. But when you get in it and drive, it is as refined as a BMW or Jaguar. It bounces you around a bit but it's real quiet and smooth. Plus it will last darn near forever.

I like my 80 ('94 lockers) 'cause it can be filled with alot of fire wood, pull a stump, launch boats, tow stuff, play tapes and CDs, carry lots of passengers,
it does all this in the same day with minor changes tot he interior.
it also warms up relly fast in the Winter, is easy to maintain, and for me has been unbelieveably reliable. and besides its got rain gutters which is a big plus. |

| I'm assuming that this includes LX450's.
I love the look on people's face when I take the Lex offroading. Priceless. It's a combition of realization that it's not a truck and the fact that the driver has a few screws loose.
Oh ya, and what everyone else said, especially the lockers and comfortable ride. Leather is much more resistant to mud than cloth.

| I love how capable they are offroad. Everybody assumes, correctly, what a great on road truck they are and everybody knows about the legendary Toyota reliability, but few expect it to do what it can on the trail.
I've been plowed into from the rear twice and neither time netted a scratch on my rear bumper. Neither was at 40 mph and both hit the hitch. Both cars were about wrecked.
they were going faster than .21101 mph though. |

| I love the fact that I bought the vehicle is Sept, threw on a set of tires, OMEs and sliders then hit the road to Canada! Never a worry about the usual stress that I had in the RR!

| You guys said it all, I love Birfield axles, mostly the solid axle up front, excellent weight distribution, awesome offroad capability. I can no way compare my 80 to my previous truck, Xterra. Only regret I have now is I should have bought the 80 5 years ago instead of getting my Xterra. Oh well... |
