sound system

The factory sound system in my 80's (1996) landcruiser and everybody else who has kept the factory one in, knows that it flat out sucks. so its common when we want to fix that. right? put in a new reciever, new speakers, an amplifier (one that can handle the LC's weak power supply), and a subwoofer. yeah it will cost a little bit, so what? but i dont really feel like ripping out everything, re-measuring, cutting, and all that jazz. although i am fully capable of doing all of that, i dont have the time, and i dont want to pay someone to do all of that because this is not my #1 investment right now. so ill probably buy a decent pair of speakers that will just fit in place after i take out the factory speakers. no wiring or anything, just disconnect the old, and slide in and re-connect the new. simple. then i want a little bass added to that, but there is one problem.......i dont want to hog up all of the back-end space with a big box that i have to re-connect every time i want the room. so ill buy a powered sub thats only like 3'' tall and slide it under a seat or in the tire jack compartment. simple. dont need an amp if its already build in the sub right? then we have the reciever. so many people see them in a mag or on a shelf, think they look cool, get them fitted to the car, and put them in....and they look like crap. suddenly somethign that could be so simple, turns out to be so hard, time consuming, and money burning, and in the end ill end up asking myslef if it was all worth it. A: Probably not.
1.) recievers. what are some good ones that arent gonna cost alot and dont look like crap.
2.)speakers. name jsut a few that dont cost alot and will re connect and fit right in place after you take out the old ones?
3.)subwoofer. whats the difference between a powered sub and a regular sub. (besides size, i mean sound quality.) i want one thats not to big and i can slip under a seat or something like that. not one that i need a box and amplifer for.

Pictures would be the biggest help. websites. anything that could hep me fix this for not too much time and money, but not something that looks like crap, preforms like crap and is cheap. im not gonna sacrifice quality for a little more money. thanks. (1996) 80 series green land cruiser with tan leather interior.

Search in the 80's tech section. Plenty of pics and advice. The biggest problem is the depth of space in the doors. Deep fitting speakers won't fit.

All subs have to be powered. If you are refering to the sub/amp units built into one unit that is one thing. I think Clarion makes a new 7" that will fit under a seat, maybe not in an 80 though. It will certainly be better than stock but its not going to hold its own to a subwoofer or pair of subs and a big amp. I listen to mostly country and rock so I like hard hitting tight bass, not that loose uncontrolled thumbing sound that people who listen to rap like. To be honest I wired up my 400watt Xtant amp and my 2 10" Kicker Solobarics. The stock speakers don't sound bad when you take the bass out of them, others will disagree I'm sure. I am still going to replace the HU eventually because mine is starting to have "issues", as for the stock speakers, I'm leaving them in.
