Right about 2:20 shows why I wouldn't want to be in one of those things.
I agree with firetruck, people mostly just making a statement.
Why exactly would you not want to be in it? A person would probably survive that crash. What do you think a Land Cruiser would look like after hitting concrete at 70 MPH?
Size matters when you're crashing into another vehicle. If you held a gun to my head and told me I've got to be in a crash with another car, I'll choose the larger vehicle. But if you hold the gun to my head and tell me I've got to be in a crash with a brick wall, I'd probably think more in terms of sound engineering rather than "bigger is better."

Here is the land of "every other car is a crew cab full-size pickup truck", I've often wondered how these thing would fare in an accident. Two weeks ago I was the third car in line at a red light, on my way home from work. The first car was a Dodge Dakota, who went right on green. That means the driver didn't see the F-350 super duty that was running the red light, and that t-boned it right in front of my eyes. The whole truck (all four wheels) went up in the air, landed on two wheels, almost went on its side, but ended up upright. If it had hit the guy on the driver side, he would have been history, but he was hit on the passenger side and he made it out with bumps, bruises and a concussion (turns out he works at my company).
Had he been driving one of those Smart cars, they would have had to bury him in it. Period.
Smarts work in tight city quarters where traffic makes people go slow, or in Europe, where worst case scenario you get t-boned by a Fiat Panda going 30 kms/hr. Here in suburban central Texas, you have to be insane to make that your primary mode of transportation.
I don't disagree, and I wouldn't ever drive a Smart car. If you substitute "motorcycles" where you mention "smart cars" you can make the same argument though. You don't often see people complaining how unsafe motorcycles are (even though they obviously can be).
No crumple zone.....Floor board was destroyed.....Footwell and dashboard/steering wheel lying in the driver's seat... you could see right through the front of the car...
If someone survived that......there wouldn't be much left of them.

80 series, 100 series, Smart car, a concrete wall at 70mph head on is not survivable in most cases. Neck and internal organ damage will kill you.
The time taken for the front of an 80 series to fold up would buy you a bit less deceleration and parhaps some more space.

Smarts do pretty well in the crash tests I've seen. Way better than a PT Cruiser.
Saw one hit a concrete barrier at 50 once on some show. The passenger compartment was fine. The doors even still opened. as said above, it wouldn't matter a whole lot because you wouldn't survive the G forces any way.
I get pretty tired of trying to park my Tundra sometimes. A Smart design parameter is that it can pull nose into a parallel spot. That would be pretty OK if I had to park in a crowded city alot.
I try to ride my motorcycle into Chicago for the same reasons, but getting tagged by a cab would yield pretty different results than if I was in a Smart car.
The big problem with Smarts and Priuses and such is the video game displays that make it a game to get the best mileage. They work very hard at getting people to drive a certain way by giving them constant feedback. Between the fuel savings and the same "I'm more important than you because "I'm sacrificing to make the world a better place" attitudes you get from people who ride their fucking bicycles on the road they tend to piss me off too.
Have you seen the body kits available for the Smart Car? I think some of them look rather cool. But not enough to make me run out and buy one. Edit, these may be Photoshop jobs
