Oh HH, the filter is just a screen. you probably don't need to buy a new one. I just sprayed the original one with carb cleaner. It came out like new.

Any chance it was just the hi-lo switch not being fully engaged? Mine often is difficult to engage, and sometimes I start out with it not fully there, and things go a little haywire. . . .
