Here's my baby!

Currently being restored by Scott Gesik and crew in Lincoln City, Orygun. I went out last Wednesday with my mother (the original owner), and my son, and took a few photos:

https://home.comcast.net/~khays/share/DSCN2217.JPG
https://home.comcast.net/~khays/share/DSCN2218.JPG
https://home.comcast.net/~khays/share/DSCN2219.JPG
https://home.comcast.net/~khays/share/DSCN2220.JPG
https://home.comcast.net/~khays/share/DSCN2221.JPG

Another couple of months, and "Elsie Mae" will ride again!

Elsie is a box stock 1982 FJ-40, no PS, no AC, 143K original miles by one owner. I'm sticking with the original Nordic Blue, and she'll be wearing BFG AT/KO 30x9.5R15 tires on the original white spokes.

To date, the frame has been sandblasted, with the rear gussets popped off, and the whole frame powdercoated. All rust in the doors, tub, and fenders has been fixed, including replacing the rear sill, and the rear quarter panels. All body panels have had the sandwiches popped apart, cleaned, high-zinc painted, rewelded, and seam-sealed. The tub has been coated on the bottom, and on the floor. The mechanicals have been cleaned and detailed.

Replaced parts include the exhaust pipe and muffler, the clutch master cylinder, the choke cable, a few bolts that were rusted into the tub, and misc. gaskets and rubber bits.

No other mechanical work is planned, or needed, other than a carb rebuild when I get her back.

Yup, "boy" has already staked his claim - I told him he could have it, in thirty years, when I'm done with it. Heck, I waited 22 years to get it, he can wait at least that long!

Of course, his older sister *may* have something to say about it.

Congrats. I hope you continue to take lots of pictures. If you ever plan on wheeling it, you may want bigger tires like 33's.

This cruiser has to mean a lot more to you than most of ours since you have had it since you were a kid.

looks GREAT, your mom is cool

few things

How are they painting or whatever the goldish cad plated hardware under the hood?

you should paint the shocks black or replace them with OEM or OME painted black.

Now would be a great time to add OEM PS. Prolly the best upgrade you can do and you do it OEM.

those wheels are not stock 82 fj40 white spokes, they are aftermarket.

If you haven't I would replace all the TRE's and stuff, just makes it drive so much better. If you got any leaks, might want to replace some gaskets............but as you know the list could go on and on

again looks killer and not cheap! I have heard of Scott before, interested to see his work, looks very good so far.

Mom is cool - comes from 44 years of taming Dad

They've got some goldish paint that matches the cadmium plating pretty well - you have to look very closely to see the difference.

I'll take care of the shocks, later - thanks for the catch.

No PS, thanks, I've got great upper-body strength!

Those wheels aren't mine - mine are out for powder coating, those are just some junkers Gesik had around the shop that they put on so they can keep it on the dollies.

The steering has been gone through, and the TREs all replaced.

No leaks, so no need to replace gaskets. I compression tested last year, and all the cylinders came in above 140 PSI, and are within 10% of one another. Doesn't use oil, either. The engine and drive train have been babied, as Mom is a very conservative driver, so I may make 200K before needing a rebuild.

Not cheap is right - I paid Mom $2300 for the cruiser (she'd have given it to me for free, had I asked), and Gesik's work will run $13K to $15K, plus another $600 for tires.

It's not about the dollars, though...

That is bar none one of the most detailed restorations I have ever seen on a cruiser, drilling and pulling apart the panels is top notch.

How many hours do you figure will be into it when your done?

I really couldn't say how many hours, as it was quoted as a "job".

I really wish I could have been there when much of the work was done, but Scott has been very good about explaining the how and why of what he does. No trade secrets, that I've seen, just lots of "best practices", things that have been discussed here.

From what I've picked up, he uses the restorations of Landcruisers to fill "dead time" in his shop. Since I wasn't in a hurry to get the job done, didn't have the time myself, and could afford to have it done, it was a good match. I believe this is the first non-spec restoration they've done.

I was told they just picked up five FJ-43 cruisers from Saudi Arabia, former police cars. One was in the shop. The *only* rust on the whole vehicle was under the passenger side floor mat, where it appeared someone may have spilled coffee, resulting in a couple dozen tiny rust spots. The Saudi license plate was on the front seat...

on the tub, are they/you planing on leaving the spot weld dimples? I know some folks think they need to be smooth, me I think on a resto they should show like they did from the factory.

also, spending the money you are on the 40 is fine, you will still come out ahead of what it would have cost to buy a different 81+ 40 and it wouldn't have been one your mom bought new good job \

looking at the before pics, the 40 was in really good shape, the seats are like new(same as mine but my DS seat bottom is torn, but i have a new OEM cover in the bag) Even has the AM radio, OEM antenna in the correct spot. DANM fine 40!

They gave me the option, I chose to let the dimples go where the body metal was replaced, and keep them where the original metal remains...that way, someone who cares can tell at a glance that the body metal has been replaced, and where.

Think of it as an anti-fraud measure

If and only if you had hudge bank and you really wanted to be extremely picky the next big step would be to pull the rivets out of the frame and seperate the whole thing.

After sandblasting and powdercoating our FJ45, the frame did show signs of rusty water coming from the frame seams a couple of years later.

I understand were Landpimp is coming from on the factory spot welds, I really think it would be nearly impossible without the factory style equipment to duplicate these welds?

After drilling all the old spots and removing the panel, you would then drill prior to the new wheel wells being installed and mig them back in place.

The thing behind the factory spots is the head slightly worped and sucked the panel together leaving a slight void then seam sealed. Actually I think they seam sealed, sandwiched then spot welded.

Well, I had them disassemble the rear of the frame, removing the rivits, and pulling the gussets and plates, before sandblasting. From what I've observed, that is the major problem area for rust in the frame, and there was some pitting present in mine, not enough to require material replacement. After powdercoating, the rear of the frame was reassembled using grade 8 bolts, lockwashers, and nuts.

Given my druthers, I'd have had the frame boiled out, and then hot zinc dipped, but couldn't find a vendor within a reasonable distance. Maybe next time !

What part of the frame, if I may ask?

Gesik does have a spot welder, incidently, with sufficient reach. I'm not sure the factory appearance could be easily duplicated, though, without using the factory equipment.

Seeing as how the spots were drilled out it would still be difficult to put the spots back on the original part of the material seeing as how they are removed. Unless he went to the trouble of carefully filling each spot smooth then rewelding with the factory styl spot machine.

In any case you would have to dolly all the metal back to original in order to get the fatory appearance, over all sounds like a lotta work to see those spots.

My personal favourite is smooth and glass like, not many people these days care about the factory spot welds like they do at a car show.

The rust I speak of comes out from were ever the frame was not fully dissasembled, between any two pieces of metal on the frame rails.

use a product called " ACF 50 " , it is an areospace corrosion inhibitor or stopper and works awsome ! It is not a waxy type fluid rather a very viscous fluid similar to " rust check " but better . It will creep into all the tight joint and travel to every nook and cranny . It is also great for electrical connections . Have used it for 15 years in aircraft maintenance and never have had a bad expeirience !
