holy crap banks are fucking thieves
i asked my bank about extending the term of my mortgage out to 5 years blending the existing interest rate over the next three years, with the current lower rate for the balance of two years. that is a standard deal here called a blend and extend. they came back and said that instead of that they had a better deal for me. They would give me the lower rate for the full 5 years, and i would just have to capitalize an interest penalty and it would save me $3,000 in interest over the next three years plus lock me in for the full 5. they wanted to write it up right then. so i asked them to send me the math.
these fucking idiots.
it is true that i pay $3,000 less in interest over the three years. but at the end of 3 years making the same payments i am now i would owe them more than $5,000 more than if i had left good enough alone. that is because they would charge me an $8,200 interest penalty and add it to my mortgage in order to give me an interest rate reduction that would save me the $3000.
what really fucking pisses me off is that that $8,200 is more than double the proper interest penalty if i just paid off the thing tomorrow and refinanced. Also, i should be saving more than $3,000 in interest from the rate reduction they were promising.
this is a person i have been dealing with for 5 years as my personal banking advisor telling me to do this.

Hard to carry with you on a hike though. eTrex is the tool of choice for that.

That's why I got the Garmin GPSmap 60CSx. I have a 2 gig Micro SM card in place of the 64MB one that came with it. That allows me to have topo maps for about 1/5th of the country loaded. It runs independent of the laptop and I can take it hiking when needed. For navigating to some odd ball place I use the laptop with it. It will power through the USB cord so you can get only old car to USB power cord and power it. Or it can be powered from the laptop when connected to it. I save tracks on it at a 1 second interval. Makes for nice curves when plotted on the map, and it's only a few MB per day. A whole month long trip will fit along with a maximum size topo map. There is a limit on the number of source areas you can put into a topo map. Sucks as it is less than 2GB for the final map size. PS, you need Garmin's topo maping SW. Delorme's TopoUSA won't output maps for Garmin's GPSes.

that's a good idea, Nate could put little LandCruisers on the TUT graph, driving up the inclines

I don't mind it since it's the vehicles fault, in fact, it's easier to not speed when there isn't really the option most of the time.
