BTW, this mortgage lender (to which our old mortgage was sold last year) is really checking out every nook and cranny
I wonder what that says about the "new age" of borrowing
I ain't lettin' em check my crannies!

You have to dismount the caliper but you don't have to disconnect the brake line, just remove a bracket that holds the brake line to the knuckle and then hang the caliper by a coat hanger from something nearby.

I have all of the above, obviously the less tools I have to pack the better, though I don't mind bringing what's needed. Uncle Fred should have a jack and stand I can bring.

I was putting DBA rotors on my FJ62 hubs. I knocked out the old lugs with a BFH and pressed in the new ones with my pig ass wrench. Maybe I got lucky.
you might have, I was following THE thread (something clown's I think, I can remember his avatar but not his name ) and he broke one of his rotors so I was a bit hesitant to try too much force or anything.

Cool. On the mini truck axles, the bracket is NOT removable. I modded mine so it was fastened with allen screws and wouldn't require bleeding the brakes on a trailside repair.

3.5) section of pipe to separate birf (guess a sledge would work too, never tried that method
Why do you need to separate the birf? Just to clean out the oil? If you do, you'll need a new clip. I think I'd just squirt a shit ton of grease in there.
I have found a bench vise very useful when disassembling/assembling birfs...

Yeah, it should be fine, just clean and regrease.

Grrrl, I'm going to post up the list of supplies we'll need so it's teakettled and we don't miss anything:
1) 3 cans brake cleaner
2) 2-3 tubs of moly grease (I use Mobil 1 for bearings and birfs, but that could be a grave cruiser error
3) 2 rolls of shop paper towels
3.5) section of pipe to separate birf (guess a sledge would work too, never tried that method
4) brass drift
5) cold chisel to help remove cone washers and to help remove seal if needed
6) torque wrench (~30-90 lb ft range)
7) 1/2" to 3/4" adaptor for the wheel bearing lock nut socket
8) snap ring pliers
9) brass or lead hammer
10) pvc pipe or other seal insertion tool
11) drain pan for oil and to use when cleaning birfs and wheel bearings if needed
12) various metric sockets, ratchets and wrenches (10, 12, 14, 17 and maybe 19 for the steering arms)
13) fish scale
14) gear lube
15) brake fluid in case we have to pull the caliper, not familiar with the 62, on the runner I modded them so I didn't have to.
16) 10mm flare nut wrench
17) jack and jack stand
18) socket for the drain plug or 10mm allen if you've converted to allen type
19) small flat bladed screwdriver to wedge in slot of cone washers.
I have all of the above, obviously the less tools I have to pack the better, though I don't mind bringing what's needed. Uncle Fred should have a jack and stand I can bring.
dude. why would you separate the birf from the axle?
i would assume the caliper will hang up on the axle with a twist tie no problem

Just thinking worst case scenario that the grease was highly diluted by the gear oil. But yeah, on a part time 4wd rig, just wiping the old grease/oil off should be fine.

the remaining grease still in there will be fresh. just drain the diff oil out and pack a bunch more in there.
