Be prepared to hear that they threw them out.

they have also replaced the light switch and plug plate covers. i spent years gradually buying the correct old brown inlaid bakelight switch covers at demo sales and stuff so that every switch plate was brown on brown original. i can recall the day of triumph when i found a triple switch bank in an old house! they have replaced them all with modern white plates but left the brown switches and plug outlets

Indeed.
I remember the first time I re-visited my first house, where I had lived for six years and had poured my heart and soul into the gardens. The lady we sold the house to completely ignored everything and the entire yard was a weed patch. I was heartbroken.
We visited again two summers ago on our way through town and talked to the new owners that she sold the house to. They said the front yard was 8 inches deep in leaves and was just dead dirt underneath. I think the only things that survived were the raspberries and the grape vines.

My house was full of brass ones. Not period ones (my house was built in the late '60s), but the PO really liked brass. I removed them all and replaced with modern plastic, but I also replaced the outlets and switches with matching ones.
I might have a stack of brass covers around somewhere...

mrs semlin didn't cry when she saw the photo, which is significant progress. she doesn't care about the door and hardware, but she can't bear the thought of them being in that house.

On the cable jumping a pulley. My brother is careful to snug up the cable lines when the top is down or else they will jump off a pulley. When the top is down and all latched in place he just takes up the slack in the cables with the crank.

thanks but i suspect you had the modern brass ones that are shiny plated and lacquered. these are a real dull brass and they have true sharp bevelled edges and mitred corners. i am not actually a huge fan of brass especially shiny brass. i prefer the brown bakelight and i still have a some in the basement, but there are so many plates in this house it would be overwhelming to get enough to switch them all out.
which reminds me, i have been trying to source a solid brass deadbolt set for our backdoor that will tarnish properly and match the house fittings. it is pretty hard to find real brass door locks anymore. i found a double nos set for the old house and stripped the protective coating off them and put them in the door they removed. maybe i should ask them about those no, better not.

The easiest way to add our calendars to yours is on the left where there is a box that says "add a calendar", just start typing our MUD userids and they will show up and you can click on the name to add them. I just added your calendar to mine so I can see any events you put in there.

I told my wife we shouldn't drive by our old house, sure enough the first time we did she was heartbroken. In less than one year the new owner had killed almost every shrub and perennial in the yard. The lawn was dead. People use to stop and ask for pointers on their yards when they saw ours.

Not sure where that colloquialism came from but it's a common one.

Yep these were either shiny and lacquered or a brushed finish, both ugly. I'm happy to be rid of them. I have a couple more to do...
