They have a low gear, when the tcase is thrown into 4wd.

And who needs sliders, when your car isn't heavy enough to bend sheet metal?

A.) It's 24 years old

B.) It's ugly

C.) It doesn't run

All these criteria make for an excellent addition to Hilux's fleet.

It's ugly? You're not a fan of the hatchback that looks like an ATM machine?

I have an '86, love it. It's my "Stunt Car". It does things other cars don't want to do, such as spend the night in the parking lot of the bar since I took a cab home. It's always there when I return. Picked it up for $800 and the AC works. The only thing I've done to it in the year and a half I've had it is change the oil and tint the windows. Great little car. It's destined to be a first car for my girls, yes, they're thrilled. Post up some pics, I may be interested in a parts car.

O.K> I went and checked this thing out.. It seems stuck in first gear and the shifter appears in neutral. The clutch cable does not do anything when pushed in. It will not come out of or go into any gear. When tryiing to roll the car the engine turns. So it is defiantly in gear. The tires are bad , needs a windshield, drivers seat ruined, paint bad, all windows work, no A/C, 168000? on the clock. It seems complete lights lens etc... Oil is low and black as tar. It is the 4WD version. I forgot my camera but if anyone wants pics I will get them tomorrow. My mechanic buddy seems to feel that there is something wrong in the tranny and clutch issues. I talked to Landen he seems to be O.K> with maybe 200 for it I told him it was worth 100 like it sits.. There is the rest of the story. I am told the engine runs..

Did you try bump starting it? Of course, you'd need a bit of runway, since it doesn't shift out of gear.

My point is, if the tranny and clutch are toast, what about the engine?

I agree with $200 or less. But then again, someone with a rusty one could do a nice swap with that body, if it's solid metal.

shifter linkage bent? clutch master/slave line issues? can you get to the clutch fork and see if if can be moved manually? or is the slave inside the bell housing?

dont know much about these cars. these could be rather quick fixes if your lucky.

Any manual car I've owned has been able to shift from first to neutral no matter what shape the clutch is in. This car sounds totally fuckered.

any manual car that is rear wheel drive with a directly connected shifter, yes.
front wheel drive have strange linkage issues come up. I had a 1991 ford escort gt, and i had to replace the clutch. i messed up the linkage on that pos and couldn't hit 2, 4, or Rev gear for 3 weeks until i took it apart again and fixed it.

The shifter does have a linkage, and that indeed can get messed up (the Tercel I had, the lower boot on the shifter leaked, allowing water into the linkage area, and it froze solid!), but I still don't see what that has to do with the clutch. If the clutch is totally gone, you still should be able to shift. I used to shift my Tercel without disengaging the clutch all the time, just for practice.

So, the one in question probably has no clutch, AND a messed up linkage (or something wrong with the tranny).

yea, i would power shift my junk too, just for fun, and then i burnt out some syncros and had to do it for real

on the linkage issue, it could that far out of whack. (so sloppy that no matter how far you move the shifter it wont throw the actual shift fork.) just a thought.

It would only take ten minutes and a multi-tool to find out.
