I've seen the top pic in real life before, driver swears he had rear wheel drive and couldn't figure out why he was stuck. front tires just spinning. dumb ass

Jebus the first guy just doesn't want the rear end to slide and the Mustang owner doesn't want the front end to slide....I thought this would be obvious?

I was going to say the same about the first guy also....
maybe the mustang owner thinks stopping/turning is more important than rear wheel traction.

Actually, going over donner a few years ago, caltrans made me chain up my 4x4 truck and my boat trailer. Because it had trailer brakes. My boat trailer had fiberglass fenders so I took the chains off right after the check point.

While not common, it's not unusual to see front wheel drive cars around here with chains on the rear. Especially during ice storms.
In this case, they have studded tires all the way around, and put the chains on the rear to keep it from coming around on them during braking.
