seeking ebay advice, yet again...
read the details below if you'd like, but my question is, should a seller be able to refuse shipping to an unconfirmed address if they don't mention it first in the auction?
so i bought a cd head unit for my pickup that i've been looking for a few months now (rare model, not made anymore). the auction ended yesterday and i immediately sent payment to have it shipped to WA state which is where almost all of my online purchases get shipped to since i can easily drive across the border to save on the extra shipping costs and possibly on sales tax as well that i would be charged if shipped directly to canada. i received an email shortly after that stated that the seller would not ship to my address in WA because the address was not confirmed and wanted an extra $30 to ship to my canadian address which means that i would also have to pay sales tax, 13%.

A seller can do whatever they want. If they piss you off then don't send them any money and let them know why and send them some bad feedback. Maybe next time they'll catch a clue. eBay sucks because it's full of idiots, get used to it.

brand spanking new - never been hooked up
Although, I am planning on installing it one day. I would have done it a long time ago but I'd have to rewire the speakers, hook up an amp, then realize that my battery and alternator aren't strong enough, then install dual battery system, then a subwoofer or two, then go ahead and repaint the truck. And then blow the engine or something.

There are some Mud members in Bellingham, aren't there? Maybe have it shipped to them.
I'm heading up that way in July, but you probably don't want to wait that long.
You could have him ship it to me, and I could forward it to your WA address when I get it.

it sounds like it might be worth more to you than it is to me. i've had a nak CD-35z since '01 that is great, but it doesn't have the aux-in to accommodate my zune. i've tried the FM transmitter route and it just doesn't cut it, so ideally, i'd just swap mine for a nak unit with aux-in plus a few bucks extra, but i'm not holding my breath for that to happen. i'm sure you probably spent $400+ back in '04 for this unit.

thanks, but i'm pretty sure for that to work, you would also have to be the one to send paypal payment. too much headache and i can't say that i would do the same for a mud member that i haven't met.

That's my conundrum as well. I'm sure there are units now that are cheaper and better, and have aux inputs in the front. The cd400 does have a set of rcas in the back that can be used with an adapter for an ipod. I think I paid 300 or so when I bought it. The only real attachment that I have is that the colors match the lights in the interior, it has a real volume knob, and it doesn't display swimming dolphins or some shit when it's on.

agreed 101%
as far as i know, nakamichi doesn't even have a canadian distributor anymore they even seem hard to come by in the US.

This is similar to the one I have in my pickup. No dolphins or extra bullshit like their more expensive shit. Simple, plain, and cheap. I think I paid just over $100.00 for it and it sounds good. I've used the aux input quite a bit and it works great.

ya, pioneer (or possibly alpine) is probably what i would go for if i couldn't get another nak, but it's a big step down IMO. i don't know if that unit in the pic is the 4000 or 400 but the 400 has a 2 year warranty which is pretty damn good for the price.

If you have a very positive feedback record try to get the seller to send it. I live in Canada and have all of my ebay purchases sent to Eureka Montana. I have had a few sellers balk at sending there, but after I explain why I do that, (not just the extra cost, but it takes far less time for me to get the item), and they see I have a stellar feedback, they have always shipped.

Met/not met, what's the difference? Wouldn't bother me. I'm sure you could do paypal & have it shipped to another address in the states as you would if you were buying it as a gift to someone.
The offer still stands.

The Paypal addy is confirmed to protect the seller. If they shipped to an unconfirmed address and something went awry, like your payment, they're screwed getting money back through insurance from Paypal. I understand the Canada/US customs and taxes thing, but if you're going to ask a seller to ship to an unconfirmed address, I think it's on you to communicate beforehand and ask if they're willing to, not after you've won the auction. You're playing the "easier to ask forgiveness" game.

according to the paypal website, the address registered to the credit card that is associated with paypal is the only one that can be confirmed. apparently there is a way to get a second address confirmed, but only if the paypal account is registered in the US.

I'd be willing to help, if possible. If he would ship to me, I could ship it to you or to my daughter in Bellingham. I'm in the Seattle area. Let me know if I can help.

i disagree completely. unless the seller specifies in the advertisement that he will only ship to an approved address he is the one playing the easier to ask forgiveness game by introducing a new undisclosed term to the sale, not the other way around. the seller is breaching his contract and deserves bad feedback.
and i have never had a problem with an ebay seller querying me on the US shipping address. I always explain I am in Canada when I send the shipping information, and I repeat the shipping information in the paypal payment comment section.
and how exactly is the seller screwed if he ships to an address after he has been paid? if the buyer disputes it, the seller simply forwards the email shipping instructions from the buyer to paypal. better yet, the seller gets the buyer to confirm those instructions in the paypal payment and paypal already has a record.
and we don't have a choice on this. paypal will not let a canadian confirm a us shipping address if the credit card on the account has a canadian billing address. we also can't ship anything but USPS into canada unless we want to risk huge broker fees, and USPS tracking numbers end at the border, so sellers are actually safer shipping inside the US with a tracking number.

the seller refused to ship to WA even after me pleading my case. i refused to pay the extra money for canadian shipping so he issued a refund. i'm not sure how it will go back into my paypal account since half of the payment was from funds already in my account and the rest came from my credit card and was subject to the crappy visa exchange rate. if i don't get the same amount that i originally sent, i plan on leaving negative feedback.

You may find that the seller's PayPal account is set to not accept payments from unconfirmed foreign addresses. That is the "default" account setting. I'm not rushing to his defence, but that might explain what happened. The bad news is that if that's the case, he may not be able to complete the transaction. Not entirely his fault. I had the same thing happen last year with a set of brake lights for my Cruiser. The seller tried to change the defaults in his PayPal account, but it wouldn't let him complete the transaction.
IMO it's probably not worth leaving neg feedback for this if the guy was trying to help you make alternate arrangements (in his defence, it will cost more to ship to Canada - although probably not $30 - and you can't really blame the taxes on him).
You should buy Wob's anyway. Since it was never installed in his Audi it probably doesn't have any Debbie Gibson CDs in it.

SC, not sure if you're assembling a whole Nak system, but I noticed this:

in the Parting Out section. He's in Canada, too!

It says clearly in the auction that my item ships only to the United States, which means addresses registered and confirmed within the United States. Your eBay address is registered within British Columbia Canada, which is a violation of the terms suggested in the listing. I am a verified and a preferred Paypal Account Member, and I cannot ensure my payment or delivery by shipping to an unconfirmed address. I will not leave myself susceptible to any mishaps that could possibly happen, and for this such reason I will not ship to an unconfirmed address
this was his response. i don't like the first sentence. it does state that he only ships to the US, yet someone from toronto had posted a question about if the seller would ship to them and he replied with the $30 response. and how does only shipping to the US equate to not shipping to an unconfirmed address?
