No Sound From Computer

I reinstalled a old hard drive (that was on the computer before) to the laptop. Now I have no sound.
I reinstalled the sound drivers from the app & drivers cd and still no sound.
When I go to open Volume Control I get
"There are no active mixers available. To install mixer devices go to Control Paned click Printers & OtherHardware and then clicl Add Hardware"
When I go to Add Hardware and check all the sound hardware it says everything is ok.

There was a sound icon in the system tray but its not there no. I think thats what I need to get sound.
How do I get the sound mixer to the system tray?

Ok, I have sound from a CD now but no way to control it, no volume control.
I still don't have any sound from the rest of the computer or internet.

I don't see how to do it from the Sound and Audio Devices. Clicked all the tabs and shortcut.

On the Sound & Audio tab mine says

"No Audio Device"

Some how I need to get the audio device up loaded.
Unless I am uploading the wrong drivers from CD and Gateway there is a different problem.

Whoever the sound card manufacturer is should have drivers or a sound suite which controls that. My last PC had onboard sound through Nvidia and would load similar things to what you're talking about (mixer).

If I put my old hard drive back in the sound works.
Is there a way to put the info on a USB memory stick and move it to the new hard drive?

If I remove this harddrive and then install it again, will it still work or will I have to install any downloads again?

whatevers on this one will stay. You should get an external harddrive enclosure for the old one.

Installed the old and very slow hard drive and the sound works.
THe Sound and Audio Prop. tap says Ess Alegro under the Volume tab.

So its not a sound card problem, could it be a hard drive or software problem?

Now that I am on the old hard drive, how can I copy the Sound files and copy them to the new?

The driver I have is ESS Allegro PCI (WDM) (Windows XP) 5.12.1.1171
I can find a free one, where to get it free?
I think I found it.

save the link or download the drivers to an external drive (Flash or HDD) and then swap HDDs back to the new one. Its not a hard drive problem, just your new hard drive does not have the required drivers(yet). I still suggest you put the old HDD in an external enclosure so you can use it. After you get the nessecary information off it, wipe it clean and you have a nice external drive for extra storage.

The Pro is on my "to do" list. Been looking at at the Pro for a while but got the WIFE a Gateway Tabletop instead

I installed the Gateway file 3 times and still no sound.
The

File is installed under hardware but still not on Volume.

Nice....

go to your command line and type in "sndvol32"

That will get you to the volume control for your computer. That's the easiest thing to try. Past that I'd be asking your questions too.

PROBLEM FIXED
Found the fix to the problem atPC Hell: Volume Control - There Are No Active Mixer Devices Available
WOW didn't know it was so easy to fix.
I also didn't know there was a 'Services' part of XP.

1) Click on Start and Run
2) Type the following command and press Enter

services.msc

3) Scroll down to Windows Audio in the right-hand column and double-click on it, you should see a screen similar to this one.

4) Make sure the Startup Type is set to Automatic and click on the Start button under Service Status. The Windows Audio service should restart and the error with the volume control should be resolved.

I have volume now.

The Windows Audio was some how turned to 'disable'. Changed it to 'Automatic'.

The fix only fixed the volume control not the mixer. Still don't have the mixers
I was in a hurry to eat Christmas Ham and only checked the volume control from the key board. Didn't bother to try to USE the volume.
Its getting closer to getting fixed...I hope.

Now its fixed

This fixed it:
I have had a complete nightmare with this and have finaly cracked it.
Click on Start / Settings / Control Panel / Sound and Audio Devices - Choose the Audio Tab then on the Default device there is a drop down box. Make sure that your Sound card or on-board sound is listed ...mine is: Realtek AC97 Audio ...click on that to make sure it's the one showing in the drop down box.... Do this again for both Sound playback and Sound Recording...When you click back on the Volume Tab you should see that the device is your device you then have the option to Place Volume Icon in the Taskbar....Good Luck
From The dreaded "No Audio Device" problem. - Page 3

It was a PITA but thanks to the MUD and Google, I fixed it.
