Keep up the work with the pooch.

It will want to please you once it understands what you want and expect. Thier minds are young even though they may be big in size.

ODO Ban. It is the cat's ass of doggie odor control. Kennels use it for their cleaning. I think you can get it at Sams and maybe Home Depot or Lowes. Smells like eucalyptus and really does help with that not so pleasant doggie excrement smell. I have 12 dogs. I know.

I love dogs. I see a dog, I am happy. The blue is awesome. I had a blue chow/husky mix; the most amazing dog. Steel blue, eyes too.

Well folks I have a major quandary right now. Our new dog just marked up my 10 year old son really good. He didn't attack him to hurt him but he jumped on him and knocked him around and my son now has scratches all over his body and the dog punctured my son's skin in two spots. My son said he wasn't trying to kill him or anything but he kept jumping on him and playing very very rough.

I have the dog tied up and I sat and had a very long talk with my son about the future of the dog. He said something to me that made up my mind. He said, "dad, I am afraid of the dog. I shouldn't be afraid of our dog."

It broke my heart. I know that the dog is not a fit for us now and my son's welfare is far more important than the dogs. Which brings me to my problem. After sitting down with my son, he decided and I agreed that the dog should be brought back to the shelter. If we do that and I tell them why, he will be destroyed. We were told that right off the bat that any bully dog that attacks a person will be destroyed.

This dog is perfect for someone. He is a good dog with great potential and is just a puppy still. I can't live with myself knowing full well that dropping this dog off tomorrow means he gets destroyed.

Its really fucking killing me right now. I feel as though I am out of options.

Advice please. Make fun of me. Agree with me. Whatever, I just need a sounding board right now about this.

Sorry to hear that, what a dilemma.

Find the Pitty Rescue group nearest you & explain the situation. More than likely they'll be able to find him a child-free home.

What was your son doing/how was he interacting prior to gettin jumped on & knocked around? Have the dogs toenails been trimmed recently?

Another option: completely supervised interaction until the puppy understands that all humans are his boss. This will require beaucoup training for every member of the household, and could really empower your son. Redirecting the puppy's attention to a toy or following a command will reduce the roughhousing.

If nothing else, at least sleep on it. Take the dog for a long walk w/your son & see how you feel after that. Someone else here mentioned crate-training - they make a good short-term time-out place while these kind of decisions are contemplated.

Best of luck, keep us posted.

Take Nietzsche to your vet or have your vet come to your home. You and your son stay with him to ease his passage. He deserves that at least. It will be a tough lesson, but everything has consequences. A dog is not a toy or merchandise to be returned when it becomes inconvenient.

I am not a fan of the bull breeds, however the problem here is not the breed of dog. Your living situation does not lend itself to owning a dog and you are unprepared to be a dog owner. Dogs need training and as well a ten year old should not be left unsupervised with a new rescue.

for urine a 1 vinegar to three water or straight 50% white vinegar and water will do the trick. works much better than natures miracle IMHO
he will settle down just take him with you everywhere you go that you can. thats the key to my dog and i. hes awesome.

your dog loves you and will be forever grateful for your rescue of him. just wait until he settles in and you will love him like you never thought possible

My family has ONLY had pit bulls since I was in diapers. I have only known bully breeds. What makes my living situation not ideal for this dog is that I got a dog that wasn't a very young pup. I work at home and give him tons of attention. More than 99% of the people on this board. He was left "unsupervised" because I was changing my shoes to take him for a walk.

My son said he got excited when he say the leash we use to take him for a walk and that's when it happened.

He was JUST groomed and ears cleaned, anal glands expressed, toenails trimmed and had a pricey vet visit.

My son and I are both going to sleep on it.

Thanks for the update, sounds like you are basing your decision on quite a bit of breed-specific experience.

FWIW, these folks are in your neck of the woods, and could prolly refer you to the closest Pit Rescue: 818-999-2400, CFSites - RESCUE ME INCORPORATED - Home

Not being there when it happened, I'm hoping that you can find it acceptable to give the dog another chance, albeit somewhere else. Going overboard on the 'happy leash dance' is correctable behavior; continued prey drive on small people is much more difficult to modify.

I put down a bull terrier whom we'd been housing on a bite watch, after he opened a gate to 'play' w/some other dogs, snapping off a canine tooth in another's foreleg and driveby biting 2leggeds in the process. While it was the proper thing to do, it was VERY difficult.

Best of luck to ya, however it goes.

x2 on the pit rescue... since its still not full grown and a little rough on the play (don't know better/still a pup) I think they will definitely take him.

We grew up always having dogs (lots of pit bulls)... They sometimes need to be reminded of their place within the family. Firm tone.... "inner hollow tube" is also good. We used rolled up news paper... When they would try to bite the news paper, WE/I would pounce on them with the firm voice... NOT exactly on him... but to him we were reminding him of his place... That was about all of the aggressiveness they would know. Fighting among them was not allowed. They behaved when visitors were around and became very protective when we were not around or we seemed to be in trouble... But we always reminded them of their place in the "pack".

Have you gotten any feedback from the trainer?

I think the big one here is your son is not enjoying the dog anymore... And he does not feel safe.

Hope everything turns out well for your family.

Sooo... my son woke up and was feeling really sad. I sat and talked with him and he said it wasn't the dog's fault. He was just really happy to see him and it went too far. He said the dog doesn't deserve to die just for being happy.

So he's still around and we're still training and still cleaning messes everywhere.

I ripped out the carpet on one of the stairways because the dumb dog kept using it as a toilet.

He is getting better. We can see it and hopefully it stays that way.

Glad to hear he got another chance -- I sincerely hope it works out for everybody.

Sorry to hear about the messes... I'm sure you're trying the '20m after ingesting' trips outside and crate training him. Sometimes it takes a little while to 'get it' : the last 2 dogs to move in w/me also took a little bit to learn how to poop in the woods via dog door insteada the kitchen...

So, are you still feeding this dumb pit bull that eats your kids and shits all over your house?

The dog has improved. Has the occasional accident because one of us is too lazy to walk the dog. But its a rare event now.

We have been doing the dog obedience training and sure enough after the 3rd week now we see signs of actual listening. No intelligence yet but he can sure enough listen.

If he thinks his walks aren't long enough he'll bite the leash and pull when he sees the house. I think I need to get a mountain bike to properly walk this dog.

He has since not tried to make my son his bitch since I showed my kid how to body slam the dog and pin him. That helped.

We have had two dinner parties where we had a dozen or so people over and on both occasions he knows when someone is at the door before the door bell rings. He wont bark but he does growl until I introduce the people to the dog.

Now the main reason the dog is staying.....

We had two mormon punk kids going door to door. They rang the door bell, the dog growled....as soon as I opened the door the dog went nuts and just plain wanted to eat both of them!!

Good dog!!

We must live in the same neighborhood! Two Mormon kids came by last night - my Jack took care of them.

I do have to say these guys were nice enough and did leave - but O boy - my Jack wanted a piece.

I used to exercise my 1st doberman via mountain bike. Just work up to the speed/distance slowly, and don't let him try to 'herd' you, bite the tires, etc.

This might be a good investment: The Dog Bowl offers Pet Ego Walky Dog Bike Walker.

I just put a tab lead on the dober's collar & let him 'lead' himself. That wouldn't satisfy legal leash requirements though.

Also not recommended: leaving tire marks on canine when he stops in the trail to turn around and check on your location... luckily nothing was broken.

Take up running if you don't already. I have 2 rescue dogs a lazy JRT and a lab Shepard mix. The lab shep mix is the best dog I have ever had. She has been my running partner for almost two years now. Not only will you get in great shape the dog will love you for ever. I have run 17.5 miles with the mut before shes had enough. That said dogs love to run so get some good running shoes and pound some pavement. Don't over do it break the pup in first and gradually pick up the mileage. I take treats to keep her motivated and a camelpak to keep her hydrated. After a good run give em some soy protine in milk or some K9 superfuel and you will have a buff happy dog.
