I sold my tinny the other day. One of the guys at work offered me pretty much what I paid for it about 7 years ago. So until I build the 6m Plate alloy boat with 180hp Yanmar diesel inboard I am going to buy a Kayak. I'd love a Hobie Adventure Island but I will just get a cheap polyethylene sit on yak. The local tackle shop has them for $450 including the paddle.

The kayaks are pretty basic but once I fit my Lowrance sounder and Garmin GPS, which I kept when I sold the tinny, and fit a couple of rod holders and a bit more storage it should be a good little fishing rig.

G'day.
We have a Kayak down at the beach and I love it. Enough room to put a bucket of bait, some beers and a sandwich, and some rods. It's nice to paddle into the flats and catch some dinner

I was looking at getting a twin seater kayak but for $450 it is cheaper to get two single seaters. I'll just get one to start with and if I decide I want another kayak for the or for Kirra I might upgrade to a better kayak for myself and keep the cheapie for the spare yak.

you could probably build a nice stitch and tape sea kayak for that much.
just saying.
it would be a lot nicer, more seaworthy boat

I've had kayaks before and I love them. They can't handle the seas or the distances or the loads my tinny could but they open up a lot of areas the tinny can't go.
When I take the cruiser over to Fraser Island it would cost me double to take the tinny on the trailer but the kayak on the roof bars is the same price.
When I go to visit the in-laws in Maroochydore I can't take the tinny either as there is no room to park the trailer. Their apartment is overlooking the Maroochy River so I could carry it over the road to fish while the girls are off shopping.
The local water supply dam is stocked with Barramundi and Bass. They have motor size restrictions and I haven't been allowed to fish there for quite a few years. In the kayak I'll be able to 4wd around to the good spots up the back of the dam and then launch the kayak off the bank.
When I get the 6m finished I'll be able to use the kayak as a tender too.

One of guys at work has built a couple of them and is trying to convince me the same thing.
These plastic ones are just about indestructible though. I could untie it and just push it off the roof racks without fear of damaging it.

if you decide that you need a project PM me, my dad has a great, proven seakayak design that he built a shitload of in workshops and such
he pretty much got shut down for the workshops due to nervous insurance companies, but it is a great boat
I've built three, and paddled dozens, in varying conditions of seas
if you'd like some plans, let me know
here's a link to the three piece version: Building my Volkskomponentkayak
I painted the one in the link (the sprayed stuff anyway) my dad is the madman with the jigsaw
TUT discount applies (free)

VERY nice looking kayaks gladly
At this stage I will probably just buy one but if I find I need one with a bit better sea handling I might just PM you about getting some plans.
