Tried the local stores first. Now I am hitting the chains. Amazon could be my fall back.

No one seems to know exactly what's wrong with it.
Shop #1 - master cylinder and rear brakes out of adjustment
Shop #2 - brakes needed to be bled and/or MC
Shop #3 - found nothing wrong

So on that basis alone I'd imagine he's still in very critical condition and was hit really, really hard. I think personally at that point I'd rather be let go knowing that the person that wakes up on the other side is almost definitely not going to be the one they all know.
Really big shame, even worse that the family has to go through all this.

I'd go over the Beartooth Pass on highway 212 from Billings to Yellowstone if the weather is good. That would take you through Red Lodge, MT and Cooke City, WY. Otherwise I'd go through Cody, WY on highway 14 which crosses the I-90 just north of Sheridan, WY at Ranchester and go in the east entrance. Both are very scenic so doing them while it is light out is a must. If there is to be any storminess I'd opt for going in via 14. The top of the Beartooth pass can get closed due to snow any day of the year. Also lightening storms can be real fun up there.
In Yellowstone the best wildlife viewing is generally in the Lemar valley which also has the road to the north east entrance by Silver Gate. That isn't to say that there isn't good viewing other places, it is just that the lemar valey is very wide open so you can see much further.
Yellowstone Net is a good resource for current wildlife happenings in the park. They also have lots of other information too.

rear brakes could be completely non functional and you'd hardly notice, they don't do that much
did they bench bleed the MC?

This is a family trip. That's the reason it's three weeks. If I came by myself I would fly. We are currently debating whether to take the dog....

Yep. In stock and shipping.
This "visiting four stores" bullshit does not compute.
One minute at my computer keyboard. Two days later it's delivered TO MY HOUSE. No driving. No crowds. No shipping charges, no sales tax. And usually for the same price as the lowest local price, often less than that.
I buy easily 75% of my stuff through Amazon now.

Bad booster.
Also something's fucked with the rear brakes/parking brake. Either the bellcranks are seized or the rear brakes need adjusting. Or both.
