What year of car are we talking here? Because my GTOs, my 55 Chevy and other oldies I have worked on are almost as simple as a FJ40

one of the thing about doing the easy route with the dinner is that there are no leftovers for us.

Why do you think they changed the exterior design every year? Because the point was to buy a new one every year, not fix the one you already have.
My dad is an old GM fan, and he agrees with you. When I was a kid, I remember him telling me what junk those old American cars were... But they sure did look good.
He had a love/hate relationship with all of his old classics. Kinda like boats: every hour you spend loving it, you spend 3 hating it. They were built to sell and that's about it.

I must say, my 68 GTO, my 55 Chevy, my dad's 69 Road Runner, 67 Plymouth, and more were VERY reliable, even when they were over 20 years old and had spent all their time being pushed and pushed hard.
Every one of them were simple to work on, other than the Mopars we had if you had to change a starter. Tune ups and servicing were a breeze and not much different than what I find with my Cruisers.

yes - and the guys in the Buick club agree - they used to buy a new car every two years, or even every year - like clockwork: trade the old one in, get the newest model

Come to think of it, they haven't changed much at all, have they? Hence the situation they're in....

I am not saying they can't be reliable - I am also not saying that they are complex
what I am saying is that the geometry is such that you cannot get to things, or you have to remove all kinds of other stuff
for example, 3 Bowden pulls are shot/stuck (or inop for other reasons) in the Buick - no way to get to them under the dashboard, and they are hidden underneath the heater/blower, which to remove already looks like a major PITA

Yep. I knew of a lot of people growing up who did that, too. Today it isn't much different: the average American owns their car only 3 years. The Average Volvo owner keeps theirs 13.
My dad used to be like that, too. Then, he bought his first Volvo and Mercedes, and found out what it was like to own a car you can drive for 20 years.
Lately, he's fallen off the wagon and started buying American stuff again. Sean will tell you how nice the Dodge RAM with Diesel he owns is -- I drove it up to camp a couple weeks ago to get the ATV. The engine is great, a million mile engine if ever one was built... But I don't understand the purpose of putting a million mile engine in a 60,000 mile truck. Practically everything BUT the engine has been replaced at least once on that thing.

I only sold 4 cars in my life: the VW Passat before I came to the US
the old Honda Accord, which had developed a hesitation and probably only ran on 3 cylinders
and when I got the position in AZ, and my has-been husband his in WY, we exchanged a slightly newer Accord against the Mitsubishi AWD clone that we still drive, and a Honda Civic hatchback against the little car
there was absolutely nothing wrong with the Hondas the Mitsu bus was yet another practical choice, but by the time I got the car, I was ready to break from being practical all the time I guess divorces do that to you - or at least me

I feel sorry for the Canadanian student I sold the old Honda to, but he could have had it checked out as I recommended, but he didn't
about 2 months after I sold it, the Honda dealer in town calls me - it had been towed in and they had my name in their computer......

We're conversing, reading the internet, and watching a movie. I can only handle it so long then I need a break. Mom heard about Fight Club so it's on. I'm not paying attention to it as I want to watch it with my full attention.

Jen wouldn't appreciate me building a lowrider. I don't think she would get it.
Front to back, side to side, three wheel motion....

Replacing the valve cover gasket (because the original had transmogrified into some unknown compound...) means...
... unbolting the AC compressor
... unbolting the AC compressor bracket that is fit tightly over the valve cover
... one of the bolts that hold the AC compressor bracket is a cylinder head bolt
... and it's one that threads into a coolant passage
All I wanted to do is stop the darn oil leak...
Or:
Transmission no worky in Low. Pressure diagnosis necessary.
Main circuit diagnostic port identified.
Plug in said port removable only by using a slinky wrench
Can I get my pressure gauge connected - no
Can I get my hand in between the x-shaped frame and the transmission - no
I built an extension for an 1/8 NPT port; Claudia's hands were small enough to reach up there and install it.
the good thing: Pressure on the main circuit within specs...
Of course, now it leaks from the port extension...
