I had an '82 and an '85. My brother had an '85 GTS convertible. When I met Mrs. yooper I had the '82 and she had an '85. She rear ended someone with hers and I think we had it fixed and eventually sold it before getting the other '85.
I love Celicas of that generation. My '82 was my first and favorite car.

My sister-in-law was telling me about her first accident, how she was driving late at night through some section of town, came over a hill, and her car hit some black guys.
I was all WHAT?
She had said "black ice."

Getting ready to go to the ski hill. The swap is this weekend. Tonight I'm going with dottir1 and the highschool ski team to help set up. Tomorrow afternoon I'm working the intake counter, so I'll get see everything that comes in. Tomorrow evening is the race team members only swap. Unfortunately dottir1 is having a Halloween party at the same time so she can't come. I might snag some stuff for her and hide it and bring her back on Saturday and if she doesn't want the stuff I'll put it back in the sale...

Me too.
Someone on the 60 forum had similar problems, but his problem was that the TC was functioning, but wasn't getting the signal to stop going in low range.
I don't know how you would test that.

grrl, have you had any fluid leaks near the back of the engine?
one diy option you have is to crawl under the truck and disconnect and clean all the harness connectors to the transmission with contact clean and then give them some dieletric grease, and then pull the centre console inside the truck and do the same.
also, does a 62 have obd1 check engine diagnostic codes? if so, it might also have TCM codes, aka transmission control module. if you have the FSM you can read about how to pull those codes at the front of the transmission section. On an early 80 it just takes a paperclip to jump two connectors in the DSC box and then you count the light flashes on your dash and it tells you what the problem is. There is also a series of driving tests in the FSM you can do that help you diagnose the problem based on transmission behaviour.

fluid leaks can spatter your transmission connectors and corrode them, especially coolant. I would check those connectors. it is not as ugly as it sounds although you may spend some time cleaning dirt and gunk away to get at them. I would not trust a transmission shop to diagnose that honestly. those guys tend to find you need a new transmission 9/10 times instead of a $5 connector.
if your truck had obd1 codes then i think it had tcm codes too, but did you pull transmission codes or just standard check engine codes? they are different and regular engine codes tell you nothing about the tranny because toyota used to have a separate transmission ecu called the tcm. if you did pull TCM codes you need to know what were they because they will point directly at your problem.

Ah yes... this is what I got:
12 - RPM Signal - No “NE” or “G” signal to ECU within 2 seconds after engine has been cranked
41 - Throttle position sensor - Open or short circuit in throttle position sensor signal
43 - Starter signal - No “STA” signal to ECU until engine speed reaches 800 RPM with vehicle not moving
51 - Switch signal - No “IDL” signal, “NSW” signal or “A/C” signal to ECU, with the check terminals E1 and TE1 shorted.
I'll have to look into that TCM thing.
