My son wanted to play games today. We let him pick. He started with Chutes and Ladders. Then he picked Mancala, and beat me three games out of four. Then Mrs. Jman said maybe it was time to teach him chess. So I started with a starter chess set, which has a smaller board and some intro games to learn how the pieces work. We went through all those, and I thought that was enough, but he wanted to play a real game.
So I did.
He really enjoyed the game, but wasn't happy when he lost. I gave him lots of instruction during the game, had him reconsider many ill-advised moves, but finally could delay winning no longer. When it was over, his eyes got a little teary. I explained that I had played a few hundred games, and this was his first, so he couldn't possibly expect to win--that the alternatives were either (1) I was going to win, or (2) I was going to intentionally play poorly to let him win, so which did he want? He said he wanted to play again.
So I did.
This time, he was much wiser--didn't need as much advice, didn't jump the gun on taking pieces, thought things through, and we had some good exchanges. Fucker even took my queen. It took a while for me to win this time, considering I wouldn't let him make moves that I would consider "mistakes." He was less upset, and felt a bit better since he took more of my pieces.
After dinner, he wanted to play again, so I had him play his sister. She hasn't played in years, but once it going, she did a great job of covering her pieces and using them together for defense. I got a little miffed though, because my son made a mistake, and she took his queen, and she said "Ha, I took your queen." So, I decided to help my son. I got him to be a bit more aggressive with his rooks and bishops, and soon all her pieces were running for cover. She eventually won, but at least he pulled even for a while.
I have never played chess seriously. My mom always would beat me, and I in turn would always beat my sister. I didn't play too many other people. I found myself telling my son "If you find yourself getting beaten by someone, don't get mad--see what you can learn from them, because obviously they know something that you don't." Someone should have told me that when I was a kid.
|
That is awesome. Chess is a true skill game.

Awesome. Leftovers should last about two weeks, then you'll have a week to look forward to the next turkey infusion.

My mortgage company handles it all now, but it might soon be time to take that out of their hands. Makes sense that there would be a stand-alone option that I could pursue.

It's nice. We go there once a year or so. We haven't hiked to the top yet, maybe next year.

Seriously it was incredible last night. She somehow manages to stuff butter and herbs and stuff inside the turkey skin, cooks it hot for a bit then slow cooks...its frickin' incredible.
In my family we've had a long standing tradition of cooking turkeys long enough that they turn into cardboard. This was a welcome change. I'm looking forward to seeing my parent's faces when they realize that turkey can be uber-nom.

appraised value for tax purposes does not have to be accurate as long as everyone is valued according to the same approach. it is all relative since all they do is decide how much money they want to levy then divide that by everyone's pro-rata share. they could do it on a point system. most jurisdictions deliberately undervalue everyone compared to market so people think they are getting a deal on their taxes. that is not the case.

our old vw westy would float in snow and also suffered from having narrower axles than anything breaking a trail so it was always going off camber or getting steered off in weird directions.
