Then Mrs. Jman said maybe it was time to teach him chess. So I started with a starter chess set, which has a smaller board and some intro games to learn how the pieces work. We went through all those, and I thought that was enough, but he wanted to play a real game.
So I did.
He really enjoyed the game, but wasn't happy when he lost. I gave him lots of instruction during the game, had him reconsider many ill-advised moves, but finally could delay winning no longer. When it was over, his eyes got a little teary. I explained that I had played a few hundred games, and this was his first, so he couldn't possibly expect to win--that the alternatives were either (1) I was going to win, or (2) I was going to intentionally play poorly to let him win, so which did he want? He said he wanted to play again.
So I did.
This time, he was much wiser--didn't need as much advice, didn't jump the gun on taking pieces, thought things through, and we had some good exchanges. Fucker even took my queen. It took a while for me to win this time, considering I wouldn't let him make moves that I would consider "mistakes." He was less upset, and felt a bit better since he took more of my pieces.
After dinner, he wanted to play again, so I had him play his sister. She hasn't played in years, but once it going, she did a great job of covering her pieces and using them together for defense. I got a little miffed though, because my son made a mistake, and she took his queen, and she said "Ha, I took your queen." So, I decided to help my son. I got him to be a bit more aggressive with his rooks and bishops, and soon all her pieces were running for cover. She eventually won, but at least he pulled even for a while.
I have never played chess seriously. My mom always would beat me, and I in turn would always beat my sister. I didn't play too many other people. I found myself telling my son "If you find yourself getting beaten by someone, don't get mad--see what you can learn from them, because obviously they know something that you don't." Someone should have told me that when I was a kid.
|
I consider it a serious lack in myself that I never really learned chess.

It's pretty satisfying to live in a house that you fixed up yourself. But holy schnikes it's a fuckload of work.

You might get away with some really serious pruning and get the orchard to come back to life. It's worth a try.

the main thing is whether or not it is a solid well constructed base, if so, it's worth the work

Whoa!!!!!
I am tired. No snake bites. No falls. Very little whining. Way too much drinking. A good field trip all the way around. The students were great. A cannot fathom why people hike in Chacos. Too many rocks and cacti for my taste.
I will say it if very fucked up to have +90F days in November. Very, very fucked up.

.62 acres sounds like a goodly amount of dirt if you are in town.

true, but i can't handle a cord. i'm a travelling man.
gasoline compressors need twice the horsepower to get the same output. i guess it is the same reason electric cars have better acceleration.

A very salient point, amigo. I think my way is clear. But it's still gonna be a challenge to cut, even removed from the bike. I look at it this way--it's free plexi, as it came with the ST1100. It was sitting in my garage as junk that I just couldn't seem to toss until the XR made its appearance and then I thought I'd give it a shot. But I do think you are correct.

well, I'll be needing a curved cut upon a curved surface. I do think the jig saw is the ticket, with the piece off the bike.

Chess is a game that can be enjoyed at all levels. It takes very little time to learn the basics and become good enough to enjoy but it truly can take a lifetime to master. You are bright enough and strategically-minded enough that I have no doubt of your ability to do well at the game. You just have to play.

It is a pretty simple game to learn, a very difficult one to master. I thought it was pretty funny that we started the day playing Chutes and Ladders (zero strategy) and wound up playing chess, which is probably the ultimate strategy game. Now that I am older and wiser, I have a much better appreciation for the game than when I was young. I was really impressed with how much it resembles a true battle--pawns stand off face to face, but can "capture" by going to the side; a few good moves with a knight and a bishop can break through at a point and scatter someone's entire defensive. I kept making comparisons to the battle scenes from the Lord of the Rings movies.
I had to console my son by saying that I had to beat him now, because I know in a year or two, he'll be beating me regularly, he's that keen on such things. (He beat Mrs. Jman in Othello yesterday--she couldn't win a game. )
