Then I'd like to kill the guy who invented this
The numbers come together in some kind of 3rd dimension
A regular algebraic bliss.
Let's start with something simple
Like one and one ain't three
And two plus two will never get you five
There's fractions in my subtraction
And X don't equal Y
But my homework is bound to multiply

Math sucks (math sucks)
Math sucks (math sucks)
I'd like to burn this textbook, I hate this stuff so much!
Math sucks (math sucks)
Math sucks (math sucks)
Sometimes I think that I don't know that much--But math sucks!

I got so bored with my homework
I turned on the T.V.
The beauty contest winners were all smiling through their teeth
They asked the new Miss America "Hey babe, can you add up all those bucks?"
She looked puzzled then just said, "Math Sucks!"

Math sucks (math sucks)
Math sucks (math sucks)
You don't even have to spell it, all you have to do is yell it
Math sucks (math sucks)
Math sucks (math sucks)
Sometimes I think that I don't know that much--But math sucks!

Geometry, trigonometry, and if that don't tax your brain
There are numbers to big to be named (too big to be named)
Numerical precision is a science with a mission
And I think it's gonna drive me insane

Parents fighting with their children and the Congress can't agree,
Teachers and their students are all jousting constantly
Management and labor keep rattling old sabers,
Quacking like those Peabody ducks

Math sucks (quack quack)
Math sucks (quack quack)
You don't even have to spell it, all you have to do is yell it!
Math sucks (math sucks)
Math sucks (math sucks)
Sometimes I think that I don't know that much--But math sucks!

Jimmy Buffett

I just started school again. I'm in Calc 1. The sad thing is that I already took the class as a freshman in college. When I was a freshman I was actually in Calc 1, it was an early morning class, when the news about 9/11 happened. The freshmen in my class now were in 6th grade then... Damn I feel old.

Please tell me you're talking about grad-level linear algebra and not 7th-grade "solve for x" algebra.

I think it's ridiculous that people can "be good" at things that are subjective, but not understand things that abide by rules and actually make sense.

It is amazing to me that there are people that understand things that abide by rules and apparently make "sense", but struggle so much with more creative endeavors that are more subjective

and honestly, I have to use statistics every day - if you know what it is about and are able to critically evaluate, you will never need to go above anything more than is available on the interweb

go for the principles, man, the principle......

once you understand that all the "a" "b" "c" "x" and the formula itself are place holders for the greater principle, you are golden

I made quite a bit of money tutoring algebra years back.....

I always hated math in school. I've never had to use a lot of math out of school. Recently I have been tasked with shooting grade for construction of a road and let me tell you it has been a PITA! I have been dreaming about numbers. It's not even really complicated stuff but I am trying to remember formulas and different ways of calculating and it has worn me out!

After taking accounting I really learned how much I don't like to play with numbers. The only math I am worried about at this point is if I have more money in my account than the cost of the beer I want to purchase.

Think of it this way. If your truck came with stock 31s and 4.88 gears and you wanted to go with 33s, what gear ratio would get you close to stock?

Put that into an equation and solve for your new set of gears.

That's the key right there -- placeholders. A, b, c, x . . . those are just shorthand for "something that we don't know what it is yet."

easy there big fella...those statistics put a roof over my head and fund the cruiser addiction... And we've had this discussion before too. It's poor use/misues of the numbers by those who either don't understand, or have agenda that make the numbers lie. Not the numbers themselves. They're just one of many tools for the job.

and Decavo, yes you use it every day. You either understand it and make it work for you, or pay the price (real $) to those who use math and statistics to their advantage. Don't believe me? Ask your mortgage broker, insurance agent, hospital, bank, pharmaceutical company, state lottery, casino, anything you buy with a warranty, etc. etc. Don't think it's basic algebra? Try designing anything mechanical without it. Good luck making money at it. Ask Landtank how much basic algebra went into designing an intake manifold that experiences thermal expandsion during operation. Don't like geometry? Try building a house, a bike wheel, or even castor correction bushings, etc. etc...

Math is easy. There's usually only one right answer, and there's usually only one way to get there. I found it more difficult to bullshit my way through a history test as I never was really sure what the professor wanted me to say. Regurgitation of facts and my personal take never got me an A.
