Working in Ft. MacMurray/Oil Sands; Alberta?
Is there a place where I could get some information on job opportunities up there? I've heard the money is good, and may be something worth doing for a while.

Look into housing first. The money is good, but you won't be able to find a place to live.
Wait, this is JJS......Never mind will you quit whining about your current situation if you move??

If I get away from some of these assholes in my life who are dragging me the fuck down, I think I will probably be able to lighten up on the bitching. I really need money, though.

Seriously, look into the housing situation. My dad's good friend manages a mining district up there and says that he has guys making $100K + USD and living out of their cars.

Sure. Any info would be appreciated. If I head up there, it probably won't be until late winter/next spring.

If you want money, head further north. If you can get on in the Yellowknife district you will make bank...............But you will need to in order to not kill yourself because you live in the Yellowknife district.

JJS have you ever lived in an area which is populated with people like miners? The more remote the location, the more reasons some have to live there.
When I was in High School, the sheriff came to camp to arrest one of the miners. He ended up having to call in 3 vans to haul away everyone who had an arrest warrant.

Housing in Ft mcurrey is in short supply. Yes you will make good money if you have the skills and talent.
It is not that easy to "just move up to Canada" first you need a company to sponsor you and have all the applicable federal paper work filled out. You are a bit late on asking for employment up in the oil sands area. The Boom started about 4-5 years ago.
Then there is the question of where are you going to live? It is frigin cold in the winter and really do not think it is a practicle idea to live in a car. If any kind of hyper expensive housing is hard to find may want to consider a trailer of some kind.
My wifes secretarty's husband has excepted a offer to work there for a few months. The time he is away will help wih the down payment of a new house.

Ft. McMurray is not mines! Its all gas and oil. what kind of trade do you have? You will end up working on building a new gasification facility of some sort. Ft. Mac has good services it is a growing town. Some companies are providing camps for guys as there is no housing. I'm pretty sure a week long "holiday up there might be your best bet. You need to see it first hand. The diamond mines in NWT are huge coin buy Damn its hard livin up there!.

NW Louisiana is booming right now too with natural gas exploration. Gotta be way better than Canada. You can room in one of the casinos up here, or the Hustler Club.

I was hoping to jump into project management or operations. I'm not even sure I have the credentials, but it's worth a shot. Better than my current bullshit.
I think I would prefer cold to sweltering humidity.

Couple buddies from Calgary quit their jobs to work in the fileds. Picked up an old travel trailer and live on the cheap. Not bad for a single guy. They said Edmonton is full of young kids with tons of stupid cash. Fast cars/trucks/bikes + lots of booze = big messes on the weekends and when they come back for a while.

Well its not mining in the traditional sense, its open pit, which is still mining. The next stage is oil and gas application where they break the bitumen down to a slurry that can be pumped thru a pipe.
There is a ton of work up there and you would make good coin to deal with the wretched environment, I believe a background in construction would be your best bet. Waiward construction is a company we use to erect some of our stuff up there, not sure if they need help.
But personally, I just read an article in the mining mag that said they are going to have a huge Labor shortage in BC, I would much rather live in about any area in BC than up at Ft. Mac.
You could also check out upstream oil companies, they always need people and the pay is good but the work is hard, you could potentially stay in the states as well.

Calgary would probably be better, but I've heard it's an extremely expensive place to live. I only want to do this for 1-2 years.

100K is 10-12 weeks of work for lots of people up here and that is with your housing and travel paid for by your employer etc. I pay my secretary close to $30/hour.

No credentials means the only way to make $$$ is work lots of hours, even if you have a trade ticket or a engineering degree from the US it will generally not be recognized here. Being an US citizen makes it harder for you to come compared to someone from the Commonwealth etc. I would not want to come up if you are looking at a entry level position as most of the nice to haves (Paid flights, company truck, decent housing, $$$) comes with experience and position. A more detailed CV might help us help you…
I have a pretty decent background filled with both field and office experience, quite a few industry certifications etc. and three trades tickets which allows me to charge out in the triple digit per hour range as a “consultant”, the company I “consult” to fly’s me back and forth to Edmonton or Calgary pretty much whenever I want and puts me up in camp all at their cost. Add in a truck and a gas card and things are pretty livable but I am working ~70 minutes North of Fort Mac. and avoid going into town unless I need beer. I billed out almost 2600 hours last year and will likely beat that by a few hundred hours this year so if you want a 40 hour a week job they are pretty sparse.
Camps can range from downright scary to pretty damn nice, where I am staying is a “Executive Lodge” which runs ~$7000/month for the suite I have:
