Help, resizing photos on a mac
Does anyone know how the heck do you resize a photo on this blasted machine, been looking at every possible application and can't figure it out. Running OS 10.4.11
I'm completely computer inept.

i use shareware called graphic viewer. it doesn't do much else but it does resize to any size you choose.

Jellyroll,
give this a try
Access hidden Preview features through Automator | Preview | Mac OS X Tips
(there are a few other write ups on the web- just search for things like OSX, automator, re-size...)
You can of course use many applications to resize images one by one, but if you have more than one at a time to do- and you want to do them all to the same size (such as uploading whole albums to image hosting sites) this way can't be beat.
(this is what I use all the time)
Basically, you use a bundled application called 'automator' (depending on your operating system it should be in your applications folder)
it sets up a 'workflow' that automatically resizes as many images as you want- all at once, one after the other- and then saves them to a folder where ever you determine.
It takes just a little time to figure out- but is SO worth learning I cannot recomend it enough.
The way I do it, automator uses 'Preview' to resize the images- Automator can however set up workflows for many many different programs (to do many different things). It can also resize images through photoshop- but I have found 'preview' to work sufficiently for me.
I am not exactly a mac wiz, but let me know if you need any help.
I simply have an 'images' folder on my desktop, that I use as the source folder, and also on my desktop a 'resized images' folder as the destination. I dump in a heap of images to the source folder (from my camera or from Iphoto), resize them all effortlessly to the destination folder, bulk upload them all to my photobucket account, and then empty out both of the folders to the trash so it is ready for next time.
All up it takes a few minutes to resize 50+ images.
Hans.

iPhoto also re-sizes them when you save/ export them.

That's usually what I do, unless I need a specific size then I use Photoshop Elements.
In iPhoto it should be File > Export > then there's "keep as same" where you select your file type (jpeg, tiff, etc) and select the size, Original, Large, Medium, Small and quality.
Save as desired from there.
iPhoto is a rather limited application for photo editing, etc.
Aperture allows you to do resizing too I believe.

X2 that's what I use most of the time
for MUD purposes, I typically choose 600 pixels for the longer dimension and reduce some more (6 or 7) as it converts to Jpeg

iphoto does a quick n easy resize. just be sure to not overwrite your originals...unless you want to. there are also other freebie downloads for mac image resizers..check downloads.com
photobucket can also resize when you upload..

Just to restate my point,
like many have said, you can resize many ways, just about any image program will do it in some form, including a range of ones specially for that.
and yes, photobucket (etc) will resize as you upload, or once they are uploaded. Doing it this way does take a lot longer- as it uploads the large image to its software, and then resizes it... it also uses up more of your upload limit unnecessarily (if you have one).
any of these ways are fine (or better0 for individual or a few images, but if you have over 5 (say) images you want to do, or you resize images regularly (I find this boring, repetitive, and time wasting) then automator is a great thing to learn.
Its just such a simple process, you pop a pile of images in one folder, run the application, and they are all (1-999+) waiting in your resized image folder, ready to be bulk uploaded or whatever else you do with them.
If you are dropping photos into the resize folder from Iphoto, you don't have to worry about stuffing with the originals...
good luck

This process is so simple, just drag it and drop, once it's set up it brainless, just the way I like it, thanks
Also, appreciate the help from everyone else regarding Iphoto, nice to know how to do it that way as well.

No problem, glad it works for you.
I was stoked when I discovered this way- it is so simple and just saves so much time- makes me think I should look into the other functions of automator.
