Criminy, my PC is broken AGAIN

I'm now on my laptop.

Last night, I was posting something to 'Mud and the internet just disconnected.

I checked all the connections, did the ipconfig bullshit thing, even uninstalled/reinstalled the ethernet card (built into the motherboard). Nothing.

Did all the diagnostics, and the device is working properly.

So today, after trying every-freakin-thing else, I went and bought a stand-alone ethernet card. Installed it, it's sending/receiving data and all the diagnostics work, but it - and the original ethernet device - simply will not detect a DNS.

Tried removing the firewall - nothing. Tried system restore - nothing. Tried hard-boots - nothing.

Tried everything - nothing.

I know the network is fine - I'm on it now (on my laptop). It's the fucking desktop.

This thing has never worked right.

What chokes me is that I wasn't even doing anything weird - it simply stopped working in the middle of a 'net session.

Fuck. That is all.

Criminy? I thought my mother made up that word as a curse substitute.

Oh, sorry about your shitty desktop.

I'm on cable - no phones involved. I don't even have a phone.

It's just some goofy setting somewhere in the machine - adding a second e-net card without success leads me to believe it's a software thing, but I have reset EVERYTHING. It's just fucked, is all.

Is this the computer you just reformatted?

Have you tried resetting your cable modem and router?

Yes and yes.

Like I said, the modem is fine - I transferred the cable from the desktop to my laptop, and I'm using it right now.

Yep, he just needs to yell down the street and tell Ethel and Thelma to quit yapping about their latest quilts and reconnect him.

Are you using a router (since you have a desktop and a laptop)? If so, try bypassing the router and hooking the cable modem directly to the desktop. I've had a router go bad before. If you don't have a router, then I got nuthin'...

What does running:
ipconfig /all
output? You've gotta run it from the command line, obviously

I assume each card says "media disconnected" because the lan cable isn't currently plugged in...

Well plug it in schmuckface

I'm wondering if your forcing a network mode that your network hardware can't support, IE: if you are somehow forcing it to a 1gig/full duplex connection and it needs a 10meg half.

Ok, DHCP is failing. What does your computer connect to? Is it a cable modem with a switch on the back, or a broadband router of some sort?

Ok, have you setup any part of your networking? Go into the properties on your network adapter and take screenshots of the TCP/IP configuration tabs (IP Address, DNS servers, wins servers, etc)

Maybe also put wireshark on a thumb drive and run it on the PC to see if it's getting DHCP broadcast ACK's and ignoring them or if the network really is dark to it.

How's about a printscreen from the laptop you're on now. For comparison.

Does the card have a link light? Have you ruled out a bad cable?

If you do the ipconfig/all on your laptop, note the dns server or default gateway. Can you ping that ip from your other?

Link light is good from both ehternet connections on the desktop. Diagnostics says the cards are working properly.

Can't be a bad cable - I'm using the same cable now. I unplugged it from the desktop and plugged it into the laptop without a problem.

BTW, I've also uninstalled and reinstalled both ethernet cards and their drivers. I'm stumped.

Can you ping 64.59.160.40 ? The dhcp server.

From the other one, of course.

ping 64.59.160.40

Enter.

If its talking, then you'll get 4 Reply from....

If not, you'll either get 4 Timeouts or 'Destination Host Unreachable'.
