Durable.
We have kids.
Built for abuse.
And neglect.
Fits the period of the house.
Comfortable.

Prairie style house with mods.
Actually I think I'm evolving away from Prairie to a more modern look. In the farm office/house at the farm I did a modern central hall. Beams extend the walls of that central hall through the living room and separate it from the dining room and kitchen. The beams end in columns set in the windows that go to the peak. The central hall follows the peak of the low sloped roof and is wide enough to put book shelves or artwork on both sides so it is actually useful space. I get a library without having a dedicated library room.
For you architecture nuts the central peak of the roof is really cantilevered off of the central hall's walls. The rafters on each side are tied to the other side with gussets at the peak but there is no central peak beam. This is so I can put skylights in there at some later point. In fact the whole central hall could be skylighted from end to end without any issues. I just need to leave every 4th rafter in place or replace it with the equivalent bracing structure from side to side at the top of the central hall's walls.
