Please find below the distances run in altitude during the Dakar 2009 special stages:

from 1500 till 2000 meters : 610 kilometers
from 2000 till 2500 meters : 240 kilometers
from 2500 till 3000 meters : 70 kilometers
from 3000 till 3250 meters : 15 kilometers
On liaison, the Rally will pass at a maximal height of 4000 meters during 120 kilometers.

Does this replace the Paris-Dakar that was canceled last year due to terrorism threats?

Desert racing replaced with jungle racing... cool. I'd love to go watch my friends cousin worked on the support crew for the H3 team last year.... too bad it was canceled.

I've spent some time climbing along that route. The road from Copiapo to Fiambala will be awesome to watch. It's high, it's steep, and it's also got some large salt plains, along with some very "switchback-y" roads.

Oh, and Flamingos and Vicunas.

I'm seriously thinking I should try to get down there next year to see it. Those guys will probably miss the Empanada house in Copiapo (they had like 100+ types of empanada when I was there, if it still exists).

For the record: the Atacama is desert. Very desert. These trucks will drive by a horse and cow that were mummified in the open air out there. Apparently they've been there for over 100 years, but they look like they died yesterday. Pretty awesome if you ask me.

It's as good a replacement for Dakar than they were probably going to find, maybe even better.

Dan

They will look like regular roadkill after the rally has been through there
