12 hr solo drive......

Suggestions on how should I entertain myself?

Divided highway + Canadian prairies = boredom.

12 hours ain't so bad. You should be able to knock that out in one day, easily.

Yup, 12 hrs straight through, no way I would waste a second day on it. I've done the round trip ~20 times in the last 7 years, not a big deal, just gets boring.

I'm not sure about Canada, but down here, "entertaining oneself" while driving is generally frowned upon.

For long drives, I usually stock up on sunflower seeds. It's tough to fall asleep when you're working your way through a cheekful of seeds.

I left Colorado after Slee and his crew wrenched on my 80 .. 27+ hrs and change non-stop till I was home again. Actually I did stop once for about an hour to visit with Poser in MN (4hrs from home). Good company, good rest...then hit the road again.

Whoa ... sounds a 'lil surreal as I type that, but at the time it was pretty simple.

Anyway, the best way to 'entertain' yourself I've found is to work on mensa type puzzle as you fly down the road. If no one is co-piloting then maybe read the good ones during a break in traffic , or a light etc. Once the brain is engaged, time simply vanishes. Find a good mensa word problem puzzle book before you go ... been doing for 10+ yrs now, and I swear byit.

Peace,

TY

PS: 12 hrs is pretty soft core though. Just enjoy the ride if nothing else. The secret is to watch your blood sugar. Consume snacks that keep levels ... level. Ditch the soda, coffee, and danishes. If all else fails keeping you up, then pull over and NAP! Amazing what a 20 minute power nap can do for energy.

I employ carrots in much the same way.

Pink Floyd's "Echos" is great for the last 30 min of a night drive.

Damn, 27 hours is crazy!!! 12 is just about right, I'm getting loopy by the end of it, but not too out of it. Unfortunately (or fortunately) there is little to slow down for through the prairies. Only 3 cities to go through that will stretch for more than a mile or two.

I did Jackson Hole, WY to Columbia, SC nonstop by myself once. 36 hours without turning the car off. I remember going through St Louis with the sun coming up and feeling good that I was in the home stretch.

I do not recommend that.

Get plenty of rest the night before. Bring sugar free, caffeinated beverages. Healthy snacks. Good, uplifting music. Make some cell phone calls. That should do it.

lol

I did my trip before ephedrine was so frowned upon and regulated. "Trucker's Friends", my ass. I started hallucinating in Augusta. But, with an hour left, I figured I could tie a bandana over one eye and make it.

My brother, and that's about it. As far as I'm concerned, it is a total s***hole. My folks are in Brandon, 2 hours west. I can do the drive to Brandon without any trouble, but somehow the trip from there to Winnipeg makes me want to commit farmer suicide. East of Brandon you drop down onto a glacial lake plain, flat as your little sister, and no bush either.

Loading up on podcasts now, I'll see what that's all about.

Hmmm, 12 hours dry time and shop towels? Anyone know if there are Penthouse pod-casts?

I did Ontario (2 Hours from Detroit) to Seattle, through the US solo (and 2 more times with my wife) but not straight through and kept myself busy with audiobooks. Downloaded them to my ipod from audible.com. Listened to a couple of the Patrick O'brian novels and was amazed at how quickly time passed.

And you're asking what to do to stay awake? How about "not listening to Echoes during a long drive alone"?
