Book "tape"/cd. Had a bunch when I did the drive to AK solo.. Just get something you're interested in and the time will fly. Get one more than you think you will use.. I found myself getting into them, so I went through them fast.

......
The loopy bit is actually tiredness. You start seeing things in the dark like bushes that turn into sheep or goats.
If you must drive without stopping for a snooze, stop every hour and walk around the car ,check tires ,wash windscreen.
It keeps the loopiness at manageable levels

x2. I lived 200 miles from the airports I worked at, drove home many times after pulling an all-nighter. Books on CD rock for entertainment & staying awake. Sometimes I sat in the driveway listening to the end. Before that, I started listening to country music to stay awake, it was so irritating I couldn't possibly sleep. But then I got used to it.

In light of the user note that you left me, do you care to rephrase that?

Loud music and windows down. That assumes weather is nice. Fresh air always keeps me awake. I will be doing a 23 hr straight drive from California to montana up the 15 in two weeks. It's always a long haul.

Count VW beetles or scout the surrounding areas for LandCruisers while driving.

Rent a book on tape... or CD.... or mp3... or whatever your preferred format is from the Library. You should be able to listen to a decent book in 24 hrs of drive time round trip. That's what I'd do anyway.

East of Brandon you drop down onto a glacial lake plain, flat as your little sister, and no bush either.

Loading up on podcasts now, I'll see what that's all about.
I've driven from Winnepeg to Russell. IIRC, about 3.5 hours. Damn, that was a boring drive.

I imagine it loses some of the effect being alone with nobody to brag to, but a favorite roadtrip game was to see how many consecutive lane changes each driver could make without hitting the reflector bumps. This is way more challenging on wide tires.

Ditto on the audiobooks. You can also check them out from your local library. If you get a good one in to, it's amazing how short it makes the trip seem.

Pick up a hitch hiker and don't let them fall asleep.

The last time I drove through northern MT I learned all about the welfare system in MN. Apparently hobos from all over the states marvel at the extent of the MN social assistance. It covers dental work.

If there is nobody else on the road, I used to pick up a handful of rocks and try to hit the street signs as you go past...
