Joy... anothe XP virus.

So I've picked up something... It's making the web run very slow, and some pages are not accessible at all (facebook, and search pages within google and microsoft). It's also allowing stupid IE popups (all are bogus anti-spyware ads) again even though I use Firefox.

I might have virtumundo, vundo, or smitfraud. I have the tools to remove it, but I can't remember how to start XP in safe mode (and of course I can't google how to do it). Anyone care to remind me how to start XP in safe mode?

From Microsoft

To use a Safe Boot option, follow these steps:
1. Restart your computer and start pressing the F8 key on your keyboard. On a computer that is configured for booting to multiple operating systems, you can press the F8 key when the Boot Menu appears.
2. Select an option when the Windows Advanced Options menu appears, and then press ENTER.
3. When the Boot menu appears again, and the words "Safe Mode" appear in blue at the bottom, select the installation that you want to start, and then press ENTER.

Nope... F8 doesn't do it.

IIRC it's some sort of box to check in the control panel to select safe mode, and subsequent boots will be in safe mode until you uncheck the box. I just can't remember exactly where it is.

Update: went into safe mode, ran Virtumundo be gone, Symantec's Fixvundo, Smitfraudfix, and Norton AntiVirus... Still no access to any "secure" sites - Hotmail, Facebook, Google, etc. No worky. "no virus detected". Still getting annoying popups. I updated Java and Firefox, and now I'm stumped. Anyone have any ideas? LoveTractor?

First, run through my Malware Removal steps from TUCHT. If that doesn't work...

When was the last time you backed up everything and just reformatted? Personally, I reformat my Windows machine every 6 months regardless of whether or not it's running fine. Windows sucks and gets worse and worse with the more crap you put on it over time. A clean start is much less frustrating and most times much easier than diagnosing a faulty system.
Back up all important data, make sure you have the reinstall disks(Windows and all other stuff like Office, device drivers, etc...), run Belarc Advisor(step XVI in TUCHT) to get any other activation codes for programs you've downloaded without install disks, and reformat. It'll be just like the day you took the computer out of the box for the first time.
I know that's not what you wanted to hear, but it's the most effective and easiest method to clean it...especially if Malware Removal(step XIII) ain't workin'.

Could you please post the direct link for this TUCHT, since I can't google it? Thx!

Sounds like he has a very nasty malware virus that loads itself into memory to avoid detection/removal. I hate asshats that write malicious code like this. Btw, when you're done recovering your system, change your passwords to all the important sites you visit; something tells me you also had a keylogger or trojan installed as well as it takes some time to write a virus that you seemed to have gotten...oh and keep away from those porn sites

While a pain in the ass, this is so true. I was going on two years on this laptop and was trying to hold out another few months waiting for the Dell E series laptop to come out. About two weeks ago, the hard drive went south. I put a new hard drive in, reinstalled everything from scratch, put all my data back on my computer, and whala, it runs so much faster and the little glitches I had are gone.

I'm just backing up my docs now. It's about 120G of stuff, including some video I need to edit and have lost the masters to, so I'm being very anal about the docs I save. I'll probably back them up to two different portable drives, just in case.

So in about an hour I'll wipe the C drive clean and reinstall everything.... which kind of pisses me off.
