Concealed carry permit save the day?

Driving home from UT I was pulled over by a Sheriff at 10pm last night . Apparently 70 in a 55 is, understandably, not approved of. He came up to the truck and I handed him my licence and CCP. He went back to his car and returned with my licences. He said "thank you for your cooperation." Then he asked if I was packing. I told him that I wasn't at that time, traveling interstate. He said "thank you have a nice night."

I can't say exactly why he let me go but he seemed to appreciate the fact that I gave him my CCP. My wife speculated that he was probably just suprised to find a resident of the little liberal hamlet of Ashland with a CCP.

I have to add that 100% of the LEO's I have been pulled over by have been top notch professionals. They have also been very forgiving of my transgressions too the tune of maybe five tickets for 20 stops! Long live the LEO's!

I've heard many a story where the CCP has helped the situation as you described. I think it's important that ppl who do have a CCP not abuse the little lead-way that is given...IMO.

I usualy have my C&C permit tucked in with my drivers licence for just the occasion. It keeps the questions and the nervousness down I tend to get a few questions due to the blacked out windows and the big GLOCK G on the drivers side wing window

I wouldn't know about the "abuse of the lead-way" what ever that is. This is the first time I have been pulled over with a ccp. Our instructer sudgested that we hand our ccp over with our licenses when pulled over. I knew this officer could not have run my plates due to the crap on my hitch carrier. So I figured being up front would make thing easier for him. I expected nothing from him but was not about to argue that I should have gotten a ticket either.

Once again, thank you kind gentelman.

In most states that I know of you are supposed to give your CCP with your DL. When they run your DL the officer will be notified on screen that you are a CCP holder. So, not giving them your permit, even if you're not carrying, and them finding that out would give them cause for concern. Professional courtesy.

X2 on the professional courtesy. Texas changed our law last year, you used to have to produce both DL and CHL to any peace officer when asked. Now they changed it to DL and CHL ONLY when actually carrying. Which IMHO is asking for trouble. I'd rather let the LEO know up front that I have my CHL even if not packing.

70 in a pig! Smallblock? Gooder that you raised this subject. I imagine the fuzz has to hear it on a daily basis. Most I have dealt with are profesionals and I will go out of my way to give them the respect they deserve. forgive my little kidnap here flyrod. The state did a five year study on CWPs'. The result, 9 carriers had accidently injured or killed themselves while at the same time not a single CWP had used their weapon to kill someone else. I like reality. These facts state to me that most are responsible carriers, their motive for carrying probably not the desire to end someones life. The other side of the coin though........tough one, only making my decision wether or not to be a carrier, harder. Plenty of comfort with boom booms BUT, they are dangerous things, no matter what. And a lesson I just recently learned, if all you have is a hammer, every problem is a nail. I had the wrong tool in my hand. Should have been holding a phone instead. Nothing happened. If I had the phone something would have happened. The hammer was OVERKILL this time.

Sorry for not being clear. I was trying to state that I do indeed believe that a L.E.O. does indeed view CHL holders in a different light, and I suspect they give CHL holders a little more lead-way than the average joe schmo. I also was trying to state that it is important that as more people are getting CHL permits that they should not use this permit as a free-be or get out of jail card. Btw, congrats on your other thread about fishin

Yep. It's just easy to say, I am a permit holder but I do not have a gun with me.

And then point your finger at him and say "bang!".

Actually, here in Utah it is required my law to inform LE's that you are a permit holder or are packing a firearm.

I've never had it become an issue when pulled over. I show it, they take it and return it when the stop is completed. The only time a UHP was kinda pricky about it was just out side of Beaver Utah. At the conclusion of my stop, I asked if he could hand my gun back that he had set on the roof of my car. He paused, handed it to me and said "Pistol"

Whatever fucker...

it shows respect, concern for his fears, you are generally law abiding even if you are a speeder, and you pass a background check.

When I get pulled over in the US I always lower the window and wait for the LEO with my palms face-down and apart on the dashboard. They like that. I actually got a "thank you" from one NY State Trooper for doing that. Still gave me the ticket, though .

But when I do that in Canada they think I'm up to something, eh?

I carry a concealed weapons permit also. My only problem I run into is that it is not honored in other states. I find places where I must have the weapon in a locked box, not easily accessabe will in my truck. I had my ruger 22 mag in a travel bag with the cylinder out, no ammunition in the bag and spent 4 hours at the local sheriff station till an undersheriff who had some common sense let me go, with the revolver in the bag and cylinder in the glove box, go figure.

There is no such word as "lead-way". It is leeway. Have a nice day.
