A tree fell on my house.

Friday evening we had 90 - 110 mph straight line winds come through Omaha. Now I have a 6+' diameter, 60' tall silver maple lying across the front of my house. More of a grazing blow than a direct hit. Busted out 3 windows, tore off the gutters, soffitts and siding, busted a couple of shutters. Also pushed in a big section of the stucco.

After 8 hours, 9 guys, 4 chainsaws, and 13 trips to the storm damaged tree collection site, I have cut it back enough to get out of my driveway and use my front door again.

Oh yeah, on top of that, nickle size hail damage to both of the 4Runners (the FJ40 was safe in the garage) and the entire west side of my house. 3 sides of the privacy fence in my back yard is gone too.

State Farm is gonna have a field day in my neighborhood.

Hodag

When I get power and internet back at home, I'll include some pics. I am on my work computer now.

For the amount of damage to the city, it is amazing that there were only 2 fatalities. 2 teenage boys were crushed in a moving car by a falling tree.

My family is lucky, we were in the basement when it all went down. Only things damaged are easily replaceable.

I hope you're right about State Farm, Doc. We have never had a homeowners claim, and we have been with them for 15 years. They owe me.

Silver Maples are shitty trees. They get big and weak. Sorry about the damage.

I hope you have a type of coverage that will include this damage because it isn't a given. Ask me how I know. Different insurance company, however. Hey, now you've got a season's supply of firewood!

don't spend your money with storm chasing contractors. go with someone local if at all possible.

State Farm is awesome!..... until you need them to pony up for a claim. Ask some of their Katrina area customers.

Sorry for your misfortune and I'm glad nobody got hurt.

Your post looks almost identical to what happened to me one year and 16 days ago. I hope the contractors that you hire work faster than those that rebuilt my house.

On a positive note: State Farm really came through for me. I was 100% pleased with how they handled their part of the process.

One thing I learned during the whole ordeal is that if the damage to the house is over $20K, the insurance company has to mail the check to the mortgage company and they disburse funds periodically as the house gets rebuilt. Getting "My insurance money" out of CitiMortgage really, really, really sucked. I'm no longer with them.

How was the wind in the Lincoln area? Have you heard if there was any damage there?

None that I've heard of, it was all east of there.
