dog hurt, what kind of medicine?

sure I could search around, but I'd rather take advice from people who I talk to on a regular basis.

My dog somehow broke her nail off, and all thats exposed is a bloody white center thing.

I put Bag Balm on it, but it must taste better than shit, cause she keeps eating it, and she went for the can of it this morning.

I want to give her some pain killer. All I have is Motrin 800mg.

I figured I would either break it in half, or buy some Bayer, or Tylenol.

what would you do for her?

Edit: Maybe, but watch for liver toxicity issues. 2.5-4mg/lb of dog, so half that one you have is probably too much. I'd be conservative and try 2.5mg/lb.

Ibuprofen (Motrin®, Advil®, etc.)

Probably no tylenol:

Can you give a dog tylenol or aspirin? - Yahoo! Answers

One baby asprin? Call the vet.

Take her to the vet and make sure everything is checked out. Don't give your dog any human medicine without consulting your vet first.

Ascriptin is what the vet reccomended for my lab. It has a buffer so it is easier on the stomach. He is 70 lbs and can take 2 pills up to 3 times a day for 1 week. I usually only give him one though when his shoulder is sore (he has a tendon that rubs on a calcium deposit).

Unless you are licensed in veterinary medicine, do not give him anything.

Call your vet and go from there...

X2
Aspirin is the only non-Rx I have heard you should give and Ascriptin is better. Dogs do not metabolize Ibuprofen very well. Don't do it.
I'd also use some Gentian Violet or Iodine on the quick after you get it to stop bleeding. If you have difficulty getting it to stop, use a wet teabag held on it for 10-15 minutes. Those quicks bleed like Hell.

I spent several days this month with the Vet learning how to apply human medicine to dogs. Motrin was definatley on the no no list. They like to use a dog specific drug called rimadyl which we no longer use in humans.

never never never give your dog ibprofin..... you need to wrap it up so he can not lick it and so it will stay clean.... that is about all you can do... proxside (sp) and wash it often and he will be fine.. asprin for pain.

also x2 on what Ed said!

My doggie loves the cherry flavored baby asprin!

My dog also ripped a nail off once. All the vet did was sedate him and wrap it heavily.

Wrap it up (not too tightly) in some gauze secured with athletic tape. Cut one of your tube socks leaving 5-6" above the toe. Slip the sock over the gauze, and secure with another couple wraps of athletic tape.

If he's a chewer and still wants to mess with it too much, it's time for a cheap plastic elizabethan (e-collar). Pet supply places should have them or call your vet and ask if you can have one. It should only take a couple days of being left alone to heal up enough that it doesn't bother him anymore.

I wouldn't give pain killers of any sort (and not anything aspirin-based for a bleeding wound) unless he has trouble walking. A slight wimper or unwillingness to run is fine - he needs to rest it anyway.
