Tragedy

I know...completely off topic...just figure that I'd share these

Taken at Point Judith Lighthouse....

Ran hard aground while steaming in - the boat was on autopilot and the Bridgewatch alarm was not on

I got a very eery feeling since I have worked on deck on that boat. It is so easy to fall asleep like that after fishing a whole trip (9 - 10 days).

Luckily no one was hurt or killed.

Sorry to hear this. Can't blame the auto helm. It just takes the boat where you tell it it to. I'm just half way through a West Palm Beach to Chicago delivery of a 75' Hatteras, laying in NYC for the next 4 days. Have been employing my auto pilot for 80% of this trip. Always had myself or my first mate on watch. We have dodged everything from pilings, fishing vessels and stealth patrol boats, all of which did not show up on radar. You need to always have someone on watch. Seeing is one thing. Knowing what your eyes are telling you is another thing. Glad no one was hurt. Was the vessel salvaged?

Ouch.

I don't have cable, but I've watched a couple episodes of Deadliest Catch, and I can easily see how these guys can quickly be overtaken by fatigue after working their asses off.

Makes me glad I don't work on a fishing/crab boat.

That G8 footage of the fast patrol vessels is impressive. They can overtake, outstop and basically kick ass against a small inflatable 1/100th their size. The power of the joystick/360 azimuth drive, I guess??.

Last week, we were intercepted off of Jax, Fl by a stealth patrol boat. There were military exercises in progress and he came upon us without warning. We did not paint him on our radar, even after we spotted him and re-tuned. There is some pretty cool $hit out there.....

we had to run out the other night for a sinking vessel offshore, radar's on, lights on and I'm hauling ass as comfortably as I can. Then one of the blacked out interdiction boats blew by me like I was standing still, I barely saw him as it was and almost hit him when we were on scene....those guys are nuts.

Up the Hudson to Troy/Albany, Erie Canal west to Oswego, where we go north into Lake Ontario, Lake O west to the Welland Ship Canal, South into Lake Erie, West to Detroit River, North through Detroit River into Lake Huron, North through the Straits of Macinac, south on Lake Michigan to Chicago.

Shouldn't you take a left turn in Albequrque?

We leap-frogged a couple coming north in the ICW for 2 days. I got some pics but cannot upload them on the boat's computer. These boats had a sloped transom ramp into the water with a large slot in the middle of it. They could launch and retrieve their inflatable via this ramp while underway.

These boats look ultra-fast, even when idling by us.

A dockmaster told me that when they spend the night, an armored van follows them and while the boat is in an unsecured marina, they remove all weapons and electronics from the vessel and take them away in the van.

That is indeed the faster route, but there's too many low bridges.

Hey man. It's good to see someone else from MA's largest county.

Point Judith is a cool place.

RI has some great coastal territory.

There are some great scuba diving areas off the coast. A German U-boat is not too far from Pt Judith. You have to plan for decompression dives. Great, spooky dive with some explosion holes.

You can also get a Rec Lobster license and catch some tasty bugs while diving.

That grounding is not too far from some great diving places. Just have to watch the current.

I met Mike at GSMTR about 10 years ago, after he recognized on of his windshield frames on my rig. Met his son a couple months ago at the Miami Boat show. They had one of their boats on display. Nicely done sailboat.

The trip has been pretty cool thus far. Stuck in Jersey City now waiting for owners to come aboard and spend a few days in the city. Weather here is wet so we road into town on the subway. Too hung over from last night to have any real fun today.

One of the owners is staying aboard from NYC to Syracuse. Otherwise, I'd say welcome aboard.
