good garden sign

Well, we finished the summer garden planting today and
much to our delight the Great Crested Flycatchers returned!
Two males engaged in a turf war over our Martin house.
It was quite the noisy show. It's been a couple of years since
GCFCs have used the garden Martin house and the wife and I
are convinced it's a good sign.
We also were able to find some Mortgage Lifter tomatoes and
hope they do their job. Don't laugh.....they worked their magic last year.

German Pinks, Romas, Beef Masters, Better Boys and Cherry 100s.
Mmmmmm
Okra, Squash, Zucchini and a variety of peppers.
Added to the herb garden too.
We gave up on the beans due to deer and rabbits. We plan on
fencing but didn't get the fence up in time this year.
Those birds are quite the tyrants. They keep the crows and
ravens at bay.

How many people do you plan on feeding with all those veggies?

Wink anything for a friend

I'll snap some pics tomorrow just for you FSU.
Here's some I lifted of the birds and a link, complete with
sounds.
The garden isn't impressive till about late July. Think
7 foot maters. 5 foot peppers. 6 foot okra.
Squash leaves the size of dinner plates. You'll have to use
your imagination till then, but I'll snap some of it's current state.

All About Birds: Great Crested Flycatcher

D'Animal, we feed our friends and can the rest. The wife's pear preserves are to die for.
It's really not THAT much. 20 maters and a dozen peppers and 8 squash/zuk hills and
a row of okra.

My wife and I have a hard time keeping up with the produce supplied by one Roman Cherry tomato plant. At least a quart a day and later in the season it goes to about three quarts a day of fresh tomatos.

Those small maters really do produce. We plant 2 cherry 100s and give away plenty.
Romas produce a lot as well but those make fine canning maters. Great for gravy.
Our favorite right now is Mortgage Lifters. 1 pound maters.
We planted some last year and lo and behold...we are retiring the mortgage....
coincidence?

Here is a pic of my wifes garden:
Romaine lettuce

She has herbs, carrots, onions, Broccoli, Beets and cabbage

Pickling cucumbers and sugar baby watermelons

Its her first garden. The cats keep away the critters- We watched them grab a baby rabbit and drag it into the woods screaming. My girls were not too happy about that.

Beef Masters and Better Boys... best tomatoes ever!

I'm not a big Roma fan, but they are pretty good in a salad.

Smkymntn, I love the terraced garden and those trellises.
I'm on a hill and had to make terraced plots too.

Agomez, we aren't too far from city life. Nearest town is about
10 miles.
Nearest neighbor is about 1/4 mile away and out of sight.
In fact there are no signs of people anywhere in views from
the property. Just views of the mountains or woods.

Id like to say I helped her but my wife did all the digging and tilling. She is up there all the time. We are pretty far out in the mountains- our neighbors are hidden by forest and mountains. summer time when the leaves fill in you would drive right by our house and not even see it. Next year she tells me we need to buy a tiller because she is adding significantly to the plot.

herb garden pic

The nice flowers are sage.
FWIW...we just had severe thunderstorm with hail and high winds
here on the hill. It lifted the garden umbrella and tossed it across
the garden. No harm, no foul. I just replaced it in it's table with
no crop damage. LOVED the deluge!

Man, everything's so green, looks nice. We just plowed our garden over, we grow in the winter, too hot in the summer.

view past garden

If you look near the bottom you can see the top of the
Martin house. From the house you look down to the garden
with the view beyond.

It's just a hill. About 1182 feet above sea level according to my GPS.
Does give a panorama view when all around you is smaller hills.

Well heck partner, share...please! We call our tiller Old Faithful.
Runs about an hour each year. First pull primes and it starts on the second pull every time.
Turns that soil into a puffy soft powder. 25 years of soil improvements ain't hurt either.
