What he said in 2000 is hard to find. I can't find anywhere where he is quoted as saying he supports the or a assault weapons ban. Please someone find this for me.

My real point is that Obama is less than or equal to McCain when it comes to gun regulation.

Here's the thing about McCain. If he reneges on his no assault weapon ban promise if he gets into the Whitehouse, it could be as damaging as GH Bushes, "no new taxes" (though without the sound byte maybe not as much). He is the lesser of two (or three) evils on this issue.

Obama on the other hand has flat out stated in his web site that he supports an assault weapons ban. That is of course until that stance becomes inconvenient for him and he says one of his staff members put that up on the website and isn't what he believes.
