Good point. Tires back then left a little to be desired, to say the least.

I've got a 66 F-100 with a 383 that'll melt the tires too. Doesn't mean it's fast.

thats my point. the car aint going fast because cutting edge technology from 69' is crap today. a simple switch to bilstiens, and bf goodrich meats, and that 69'will turn a much quicker 1/4. its all in the setup. i recall guys getting low 12's from 87 stangs with bone stock drivetrains and keeping all the suspension points the same.

gee. the truck will beat a gullwing merc, or a ferrari daytona in stock trim too. guess that makes it a funner ride.

Lots of stuff will beat a 300SL in the quarter. That's not what it's made for. i doubt the truck will beat the Merc on a racetrack.

A 69 camaro is no Ferrari.

AND the truck is probably a funner ride than the Daytona 9 days out of 10. When the Ferrari won't run, or it's too hot, or too cold, or raining, or you need to carry more than one sack of groceries.

That 10th day would be pretty sweet though.

This is gonna sound like a stupid question, but has no one ever thought about putting a 4 cyl. engine, ie the 2.7 engine from the Tacoma, in a 40? From what I remember, it's a pretty peppy little engine, and it was reliable as hell.

I'm biased to I6's

why do you hate a DE-stroked 1fz w/ variable valve timing?

in a Toyota...REAR wheel drive car?

That can haul 4 people?

I put a 350 into a FJ80. No waiting for parts in the middle of nowhere. Every Kragen, Napa, and Autozone on earth carries 350 parts, and that's if you can't find the Chevy dealership that every town seems to have.

FJ40 parts are usually 2-5 days out dependent on your source. The dealerships don't stock them.

The 350 has more a lot more power than the 3FE, is friendlier, and gets better gas mileage. I simply can't understand why anyone would want to go that route.

I had a super clean stock 1966 FJ40 and it sucked. Sure, it would likely run forever, but I needed a rig that wouldn't get run over in the slow lane, wouldn't leave me stranded because a part was hard to get, and was practical to drive long distances on a schedule. I didn't need a plaything, I needed an expedition grade, reliable vehicle that could handle everything in the aggregate. This can be done with a FJ40 with a V8, disc brakes, and a good stereo. That old F engine and 3 on the tree will get you killed driving up to Tahoe on Nyack grade if you're not careful, much less most other places on I-5 and I-80.

The main point of doing an engine swap is to gain power. You wouldn't be doing that going from a 4.2 I6 to a 2.7. Reliability? A straight 6 is the most reliable engine on the planet. A small block chevrolet isn't too far behind.
