![]() Other than in AK (where Everts still soldiers on with the DC-6 and C-46) these things are losing out to turbine engines. The biggest hurdle is finding an Avgas supplier that can fill those 803 gallon tanks when you need. Hard to make money with an airplane if you can't keep it in the air while waiting for the line guys to refill the truck. If I had a spare 10K or so, I'd probably go add a DC-3 type, just to have one. They seem awesome from the one time I got to ride in one and the many times I've crawled around them. Mitsubishi made the MU-2 which is often referred to as the Cow Pasture turboprop. They are supposed to do well on rough short fields. They have a bit of a reputation of being a bit squirrelly in handling, but they go fast for a grass strip capable aircraft.

Yup, the Beaver. We have a popular fly in here every Autumn and a guy flies in with his Beaver(airplane). Gorgeous(airplane). He uses it to fly to New Hampshire and Vermont. Not many around here.

That's the commuter plane of choice around here. There are three companies here who fly them:

Definately one of my favorite airplanes, those beavers. I just love the sound of a radial engine!

Is the DC-3 what they call the "Goonie Bird"?
I have always thought that it was but I'm not sure. Edit: I love Beavers too! __________________ Randy 71 FJ40 81 HJ47 Troopie 82 BJ44 13B-T/H55/Cable Lockers 86 HJ61 VX 12H-T/Cable Lockers (Now my parts Cruiser) 92 LJ78(Sold) 96 FZJ80 Locked Coxwell-59th Alabama CSA |

This just turned-up in my inbox. It's a documentary a friend of mine just finished:
VICTORIA, BC- On May 20th at 9pm ET/PT History Television airs THE IMMORTAL BEAVER, a documentary about the infamous de Havilland Beaver bush plane, considered by many to be one of the finest bush planes ever built. This Canadian-created aircraft has become renowned around the world. THE IMMORTAL BEAVER follows the rescue and restoration of a veteran military Beaver named Olivia as she undergoes a complete transformation into the ultimate modern Beaver. A prime specimen for rebuild, Olivia, becomes a present-day example of what the Beaver has become over the past sixty years. The Beaver was imagined to be a half ton flying pick-up truck that could land in as small of a lake as possible so that Canadas Northern communities could be reached more easily. Its such a heroic and noble story of how de Havilland Canada took on this noble mission and managed to succeeded to such an admirable extent, explains the shows Producer, Arwen Hunter. "Gamut Productions is situated next to Victoria Harbour which is uniquely designated as an airport and whenever we hear that engine roar overhead we all go Beaver! That brightens my day, and I know Im not alone in that feeling." This Directorial debut for David Malysheff was a natural fit. "As a freelance camera operator living on the West Coast I've relied on Beavers for years to get me to some of the most remote locations of British Columbia. I just knew it felt safe. Theres a sense of pride knowing that it is one of Canada greatest success stories." As this documentary shows, Harrison Ford, an avid pilot, is also a Beaver owner. Private pilots have now become the newest market for the plane that has excelled at so many different lines of duty for so many years. Hes just one of the many who are passionate about these planes. Utilized by fifteen militaries and the CIA, as crop dusters across Africa and Australia, in mining exploration, for medical evacuations, as a commuter service and impressing tourists around the world, the Beaver is an iconic Canadian-made workhorse. THE IMMORTAL BEAVERdocumentary culminates in Olivias cross-Canada flight to the 60th anniversary celebrations being held at the original de Havilland factory where shes greeted by the original test pilot, Russ Bannock. Canadas second highest scoring flying ace in WWII, Bannock not only made the first flight of the Beaver, but was also responsible for the sale of 973 Beavers to the US military. The surplus military planes have guaranteed the supply for present-day pilots, as they haven't been produced in over 40 years. THE IMMORTAL BEAVER features exclusive interviews and a compilation of never-before-seen archival material and promises to transport the viewer from Alaska to Australia. Catch the documentary when it airs on History Television on May 20 at 9pm ET/PT, and repeating on May 24 at8pm ET/PT. __________________ '94 lockered FZJ80 "I vote for Iron Yuppie" - Decavo "I am not here for your cold gross chicken, I am here for your love... I flew in a DC 3 in 1984 when I was driving MCI tour buses in the Yukon and Alaska. MCIs are the land cruiser of the bus world, all others fall apart after any amount of time in the North. Anyways, I managed to get invited on a few training runs as Air North was going to use this bird to do tourist runs from Whitehorse to Anchorage. Not a good idea to mix flight attendant training with pilot training. The two young flight attendents were air sick in 10 minutes. A friend and I were the dummy passengers they were supposed to be taking care of. Turn out the other way around. Anyways, I was amazed at the tight turns the DC3 could handle. I was not that impressed with the seats - thin aluminum tubes chairs with two foam pads tied on to them. The torque on those radial engines were also amazing. You could really feel it when the pilot feathered one prop and slammed the power to the other engine. Just think guys, you could have this bird for less than the price of a new 200 series LC.
However, 100 Gal/hr fuel and another gal/hr oil at todays prices would make it very expensive to operate. Perhaps that is why she's not selling as a working aircraft. As for the beaver, they are a brute of a plane but very loud. My uncle and his partner had a few of them in his fleet of aicraft at Ptarmigan. I remember once having a boat motor break down and having to leave my grandfather to hitch back to Yellowknife. My uncle and I grabbed on eof the beavers and flew on the step all the way up the river looking for my grandfather. IMO. flying a couple feet off the water up a winding river is better than any amusement park ride. The real workhorse and main stay of the Ptarmigan bush fleet in the NWT was their Twin Otters. These planes could go anywhere and be made to haul just about anything. ![]() __________________ John G. 姉 ![]() Join the Import Vehicle Owners Association of Canada: Fight for what is right |

Found a Ptarmigan Twin Otter just getting up on the step off from the Yellowknife dock. Sweet plane isn't she? Best summer any kid could wish for.
