You can transfer an entire user account, meaning documents, apps, all settings, email, etc. using Migration Assistant and a FireWire cable. Migration Assistant is in the Utilities folder.

Not as good as sync but it gets everything and it works.

yeah, but some files are newer on the laptop and others are newer on the desktop

I guess I'll have to do the clean-up

In the US surgeons are doctors, I was making no distinction. Half the idiots at this meeting were surgeons and the other half nonsurgical doctors. Doctors in general are shitty business people, and this was a business meeting. My rent is going to go up because they can't understand basic accounting principles. About $5000 out of my personal pocket next year for nothing.
