Why not frame out the bottom sections with overlapping 2x10's as a plate to join the new 6x6's to the old? Use pressure treated, cut them at a 45* on the top so they taper into the post, and bolt them together using galvanized all-thread and the large, decorative malleable iron washers.

If you fix one at a time, you only have to crib up a section near one post...a 4x4 on a nice chunk of 2x10 to spread the load on the ground, staked off in a couple directions, toe nailed into the header...

there's a guy down the street from the gladly compound that does that, he's on a weird shift, and at about 11PM every night for most of the summer, he's at the BBQ

although Oregon coast, some nice clear Idaho lake, or a stream in Wyoming or Montana may have more appeal than a sandpit lake in Nebraska

Yeah, good luck with that one.

Seriously, though, what comes to mind are two options.

1. Working on one post at a time, cut it at a spot above the rot (pergola should stay up on three legs while you are working; if not, brace with 2x4). Dig out the rotted post and make a post hole. Then make a vertical cut up the center of the post about a foot or 18" up into the good wood, and then out. Cut an adequate length of 6x6 to sister onto the post, with the bottom of it extending into the dug post hole. Fill hole with gravel footing, then cement.

2. Do the above, yet instead of using wood, create a form that will result in a footing that would support the solid wood, via a post holder.

What kind of wood is it? If it's nothing special, it might be easier to build a new one.

So, how old is it? And what does this indicate for the life span of what Mars is building?

(on my way to a colleague at the second university medical school in town) I happened to drive by my old workplace in Omaha today - I really felt no desire to meet anyone there

Katie has gotten some emails from ex colleagues. Congratulating her, for the most part. Despite the fact that there is a confidentiality agreement in the settlement, the terms of the settlement were read into the record during the proceeding, so everyone there knows what the details are. Even though we can't talk about it.

From what she's heard, the administrators of the department are a lot more subdued than before. The swagger and braggadocio of the director has been dialed back a couple notches. This was the first time they had ever lost, and they're not wearing the egg on their faces particularly well. Now, it's the staff and faculty who are gloating.

Fucking place.

My mom has two new kittens, one male and one female.

Zoe named the girl "Buttercup".

Paige named the boy "Sixty"(yes, as in FJ60).

It'll be interesting in about 10 days from tomorrow when they actually write the check to see who from the administration gets thrown under the bus. Whoever is cutting the check will demand their pound of flesh, too. We have an idea of who it may be.

It's funny how the enormity of this type of thing never sets in until it is time to pay up. It's as if there was no wrong-doing, it was just something that cost $$$.

somebody will be thrown under the bus, for sure - sometimes, it takes a little longer, though, they don't want to obviously stir up another lawsuit .....(which is what would be following in short order, it is just how these places roll )

some busses take longer to be thrown under, as well, depending whether it is demotion or dismissal

demotion of chairmen was more common at UNMC than dismissal

last time we landed in Phoenix, there were twice as many military airplanes on the tarmac (Michael thinks I am paranoid suspecting some secret preparation of another surpise attack)

and with all this recent talk about Iran, I am wondering again.......

today, there certainly was more air traffic at the AFB nearby than what I remeber to be 'usual'; all the old spyplane clunkers - even just a minute ago, another one flew over

just brought to TUT as a random observation....

The California penal code defines a gang as a group of three or more people with a common name, an identifying symbol and a primary activity of committing crime.
