Seeing you with those safety glasses reminds me of something I saw earlier today when I was at the bank... there was a young guy using a portable hand held concrete saw who was chopping up a sidewalk there. He was not wearing safety glasses and no dust mask or any safety gear at all.

I parked the cruiser and gave him an earful about how stoopid he was and the risks he was taking. I warned him if he did not get the safety gear before proceeding again that I was going to report him and his boss to OSHA. It looked like he was going to take what I said to heart and he went over to his van so I headed out... had to make a U-turn to get to where I was going and by the time I passed him he was back on the saw sans safety equipment.

My sad news: A friend, neighbor and colleague of mine died yesterday. He was an optometrist at Shopko, which is a kinder, gentler version of WalMart. He was 59 and apparently healthy. He was bear hunting with a friend in Montana, had just climbed a hill to get a view of where they were, didn't seem out of breath or anything, feeling fine, looked out over the view, threw his hands up in the air for some reason, and fell over dead of a heart attack.

His house is across the street and two houses down from mine. He referred all his cataract surgery and medical eye disease patients to me from the first day I started in practice here. A super nice man, very much a doctor despite his limited training, which is not typical of optometrists; he should have been a family practice MD instead of an optometrist.

He had a huge and very loyal patient following in this town, having been at Shopko for about the last 20 years or so. I will likely pick up a lot of that business. It's a huge loss for Shopko because their other optometrist can only work part time and can't bill the most common insurance plan.

I called Mrs. yooper this afternoon when I found out and she brought some homemade soup and bread over and sat with his wife, who is still pretty numb. His daughter is college age, down state at Michigan State. His body won't make it home for a day or two it looks like.

a stable repair is the trick. i was thinking of using rebar pieces inside the 6x6 to hold them together

Right now, if this place caught fire, we'd grab about 10 things (the lock box with important papers in it, the few first editions we leave laying around here, maybe a few orchids) then dance in the street while I wait for the neighbors (or maybe a passer-by) to call the fire department.

this place is worth more to me burned to ground than it is standing.

i love this house intensely but i am dubious i would get my money back out of it
