It appears that the level has remained the same.
Yesterday I noticed there was a little puddle (about 3-4" wide) beneath the xfer again, so I took a pic:

|
That looks pretty wet to me. I can see a drip there. Usually it is classed as a leak if it drips (as opposed to wet but not dripping which is classed as a weep and not really bad enough to worry about). If it is dripping like that and the fluid level is full (ie it runs out of the filler bung when the bung is removed) then it must be sourcing the oil from somewhere else. The only place it can get oil is from the auto. The ATF will discolour the oil to that dark brown colour. Normally gear oil will stay a yellow colour or at worst will get a slight green tinge.
It looks to be leaking from the rear output seal area there too. It probably blew the seal out if the breather was blocked (common) and the T/case is being pressurised by the excess oil being pumped in.
The Hi/Lo and 4wd/2wd switches on the side also look like they might be leaking too. Wash down everything and then drive it for a bit till it starts leaking again and note exactly where the oil is coming from.

There are some tips about raising the level of the breather in TECH
|
The standard breathers on Toyotas clog up all the time. I not only extend mine up to top of firewall height but also fit cheap fuel filters to the ends to keep dirt out of the diffs.
90% of seal blowouts on 4wds come from the breathers being blocked and as the diffs heat up they pressurise and blow out the seals. The other 10% are usually caused from mud and debris chewing out the seal.

NATIONAL BELLAS HESS V. DEPARTMENT OF REVENUE, 386 U. S. 753 (1967) -- US Supreme Court Cases from Justia & Oyez
It should not even be happening, and I refuse to believe that major internet retailers don't give a damn, and are afraid to take on the state of Florida. After all, it's already been done once. So unless FL is looking to overturn Bellas Hess or the 14th amendment... Which isn't bloody damn likely since Bellas Hess was reaffirmed by the US Supreme Court not long ago...
|
You can call it BS all you want. Do it again if you desire.
The State of Florida has gotten records from companies in many states and they are forcing them to collect Sales Tax for the State of Florida for all residents (when billing and shipping address are Florida). LL Bean, BassPro, Apple, Dell... the list goes on. Ask me how I know about Dell since they just collected the Sales Tax on the purchase of the shop computer as the Agent for the State of Florida Department of Revenue.
Some of these companies have facilities in Florida but most do not. The companies cave because it is cheaper to just set up the bookkeeping and comply with the request than it is to get involved in the legal wrangle with the unlimited resources of the state.
Maybe it should not be happening but it is. Fact.
Besides, since the tax is legally due and I would have to pay it in any case... I would just as soon pay it with the purchase than try to track it and pay it with a special voucher. It is a bunch of nonsense but I guarantee that the State of Florida is doing it to businesses to force them to collect the tax and many of those businesses that it has brow beaten into being their collection agent have been gifted with subpoenas for big ticket sales to residents of the State of Florida for before they became collection agents so that the State can prosecute people that have dodged the sales tax.
Maybe it should not be happening but it is. Fact.
This might open up a new job for you... you can develop a data base compiler to spit out all of the individuals who might be engaging in illegal non-payment of Sales Tax and sell it to all the companies that would rather just roll over than jump on the NATIONAL BELLAS HESS V. DEPARTMENT OF REVENUE, 386 U. S. 753 (1967) bandwagon.

Yep, that is my bet on what happened.
Water crossings don't usually cause oil to get pumped out because as the hot diff hits the water it contracts causing water to be sucked into the diff housing not the oil to be pumped out.

Drive bus, run to the nearby town of La Jara and do classroom observations, run back and go to psyc, run to the bus garage and pick up F19 and drive it back to the college, run to theatre class, then grab bus and begin my route early because the high school dismisses at 2pm, run my normal route, go to library, eat dinner, see SG, more homework, bed.........

An Eskimo had broken down on the side of the road and a Kiwi stopped to help him out. The Kiwi had one look under the bonnet and said "I see your problem, you've blown a seal". The Eskimo replied, "So what, you fuck sheep".

grrl should take note of this from the man who knows the real facts... around here (back when you could drive in the woods and ford streams) all the four wheelers raised the height of the breather with a rubber hose... the problem about desert dust in the breather clogging it - not so much. As I remember it we used to put an upside down J in the top of the hose like an old snorkel to make sure water would not go down the tube.

Yeah I do a full 360° loop with the tube at the top near the filter and try and face the open end of the filter down.

My transmission got hot again too. It did NOT like hauling ass in the deep sand of a dry river bed for about 5 miles.
I just parked for a few minutes and it cooled right down. Didn't go as fast for the rest of the river bed.
Wondering if I should invest in a tranny cooler. Probably due for a drain / flush / fill again too.
This was GF's first service on the 62 when I bought it, about 3 years ago. The rear was fine, but the front was murky and like wet cement.
That should've been resolved when I have the knuckles redone however. I think water was coming through a bad seal on them.
|
The hotter you get it the worse it will pressurise.
Autos hate heat so if you plan on doing the a lot of sand driving in the desert heat I would recommend a tranny cooler or at the least a temp gauge so you can monitor the auto temp and back off the pace if it gets too hot.

And Fred I think one of the ways that they do it is they make a large purchase from a Vendor and then the Vendor did business with the State of Florida. They have found a way to circumvent that law... We have a very smart Attorney General and I am sure he would not be doing or allowing another agency to be doing anything that is illegal.
Absolutely the last word on the topic... that is unless you need to have the last word.

There is the proof in the pudding... someone that swings both ways and can't get his value up over a grand.

I would check your front and rear diff oil for contamination and consider changing to synthetic as it will run a little bit cooler.
also remove and clean your diff breather tubes. If they were blocked the axles get pressurized and bad things happen including the blowing out of axle seals.
the "wet cement" is a sign of axle grease migrating through the axle seals. If you didn't get it all flushed out before or if the seal failed again it might be the same problem. If the diff oil is too thick it can cause issues in the front diff including overheating. It could also put an excessive load on your tranny and t-case when in 4wd (and kill your gas mileage).
I would also make sure you do not have excessive grease in the driveshaft slip yokes that is causing pressure on the t-case, especially the front when you engage 4wd. if you overgrease the splines or put grease on the end of the spline you can get preload that will burn out your diff and your tcase.
as for the tranny, a tranny cooler is an excellent idea and not too expensive to add. synthetic tranny oil will reduce temps slightly but is pricey.

If I got a subpoena to hand over records from the FL dept of Revenue -- if it wasn't signed by a Wisconsin or Federal Court or agency, I'd ignore it, hand it off to my lawyer, and tell FL that from then on, they could contact me through the law offices of Godfrey and Kahn in Milwaukee, WI.

Can't resist... set the hook in me.
Meanwhile every thirty days you will be writing another yet larger check to Godfrey and Kahn in Milwaukee, WI as their paralegal runs up the hours responding to all the legal harassment coming from the south. And then the State of Florida will go to the State of Wisconsin and tell them in chambers that if they want any subpoenas from Wisconsin honored in Florida it might be best to issue a local subpoena.
Get the drift? Don't forget the last thing, that last check to your attorney after they tell you that you have to comply and they are sorry it cost you so much money to try to fight it.
