usually the same as regular gear oil. In an 80 it specs sae 90 weight, but most everyone uses sae 75/90. for a t-case it is only a litre or two and it lasts a long time so it is worth using synthetic.

80 series FSM says 75W-90 gear oil. I imagine 60s are pretty much the same.

Yeah, I check SOR, they call 30 the drain/fill and 21 the drain plug.

When I did it, we were using a lift, so we just opened the drain/fill and pumped it out. I love wrenching days when people have lifts.

Hm. It was suggested in this thread to use ATF, in case the seal between your tcase and tranny is questionable.

So, if someone came up to you speaking vulgate Latin, with an Irish accent, you would want to bed him?

interesting, and yet there are threads in the 80 section about jiffy lube idjits putting atf in the t case, and having to take urgent measures...

gear oil is a lot more viscous than atf. i would be nervous about the wear on the t-case using something other than what Mr. T specs. My suggestion is that you not do this unless

a-you see atf in your t-case fluid
b-you see gear oil in your atf..
c- you are losing t-case oil with no apparent leak

Uh. . . . I wouldn't do that. They have different properties. If the seal is shot, there will be ATF in your x-fer case and gear oil in your tranny. If that is so, the seal should be repaired.

Using ATF in a tcase would be, imo, suicide.

Slowly?

You fill the tranny that way, with ATF. The T-case is a separate deal, uses gear oil.

You'll probably change your mind when you sit on it. And that's not just a boast about how comfortable the f650 GS is, is just a nod to the natural progression of things.

My MSF teacher said he bought a small, cheap dual-sport as a cheap and fast means to get around when he was in College. Typical college town (Eau Claire) -- parking sucked, so you parked the car for months on end, and used bikes, scooters or small motorcycles to get around. Until that time in his life, he never really wanted a motorcycle.

He now has over 1 dozen motorcycles, and teaches the MSF class at two area colleges and the H-D dealership in his spare time. As long as the temperature is above 50 degrees, he rides the bikes, to work, to everywhere, whether it's raining or not.

He said "you'll find yourself never selling motorcycles, especially your first. You just continue to accumulate them."

I have heard this same thing from almost everyone I've talked to. Much like Land Cruisers in that regard, I reckon.
