Each vertical member is attempting to move downward from the member next closer to the hinges. Only the vertical member at the hinge is completlely supported. The way to keep each of the vertical members in the exact position (verticallly) that you desire, you need a diagonal member that will most easily support the load and prevent relative vertical movement between the uprights.
