Yoop, Fred and Nater (and who ever else might be savy):
I am thinking about taking the old puter which was a decent P4 and turning it into a server if I can figure out how to hook it up correctly... I could host my own site if it worked out... got any ideas on that or is it just cheaper overall to use someone like 1&1 or GoDaddy or some such host?
This is something I just thought of and have not even googled yet. Any help or advice from anyone would be appreciated.
thanx for your support.

is getting her website together. I had her go to a friend of hers who is a web designer and they are working on it together... Maybe if I could host several sites... I have two URL's reserved and am only using one currently.
I think two functional sites for my biz would certainly help with the bottom line.

This is an idea, depending on your hosting needs. Generally you'll want to buy space in a colocation rack though (which would include an internet connection) because you'll have to get an expensive commercial ISP anyways with a static IP if you do not. (Nor will you have conditioned power, etc)
In most cases it's cheaper to go with managed hosting (my personal fav is Web Hosting by DreamHost Web Hosting: Web Sites, Domain Registration, WordPress, Ruby on Rails, all on Debian Linux! but there are a million) unless you really need alot of raw power for hosting your site (here's a hint, you don't )

I have done this in the past. It's totally easy on a Mac, not worth trying under Windoze, plus:
You would need an Internet connection with a dedicated IP address = $$$
You would want to run some version of Unix = a lot of learning

Plus what Nate says about conditioned power, etc.
Using a host is much much much more cost effective if you value your own time at all.
Tweaking a server constantly gets old fast.

Doesn't the plow run off the PTO? I don't know if you could salvage $ 1K worth of parts off it or not... but HH should be back in Ameriker soon and he might be interested in going in on it with his buddies that are running the recycling yard in his driveway.
