what about an Accord or the equivalent Acura ?
actually, the old Civics were fun - lately, not so much
if you are truly after a fun car for her, get a Miata - they can be had for any price over $2000 - not terribly kid-friendly, I guess, though
I have heard really good things about the Mazda 3 hatchback as far as versatility....  I am thinking of geeting one once we need a replacement for the minivan
