Quick Linux Links

Ok, for those who haven't wandered over to TULT, I wanted to throw up some quick links for those of you struggling with viruses, adware, etc and who are ready to give MS the boot but not lay 2 grand down on a Mac-banded BSD box. Some quick links to easy-install and setup linux flavors.

Just for Fun, try this out:

Which linux distro are you?

zegenie Studios Linux Distribution Chooser

My quick pics for linux distros:

Ubuntu Home Page | Ubuntu
PCLinuxOS
Fedora Project
Debian -- The Universal Operating System
Puppy Linux Home - your fast, small and free Linux distro

all have live "try it" cd's so there is no commitment to install before you play. Don't fear! Linux can be easy or hard depending on how much you want to tweak it!

If anyone wants to buy a new computer with XP on it instead of Vista, you have until June 30 of this year. After that, it's only the unpopular Vista. Just a heads up.

Windows XP: Going, going ... gone?

Man, XP is such a bloated whore. Reformatted the 5yr old Thinkpad this afternoon and completely stripped XP Home to the bone to see how thin I could get the OS before updating it. Got it down to 3.52GB. Then ran Windows Updates and after Security Fixes, Hotfixes, and SP2, the damn thing fattened up to 6.78GB. Almost doubled in size because of updates.
Kinda nauseating.
What a whore.

I've had good luck with Hyjack This It will list all the programs being run and you can kill them or post up the log and let others figure out what's what.

He apparently tried Hijackthis to no avail.

Don't know where he is right now with his problem or if he took everyone's advice to clean install.

He said Hyjack crashed his system? Maybe if you deleted everything in the scan. That's why I said to post the log. I've had viruses not let Hyjack or Norton AV run but not crash it if run.

Well I guess he'll be back after the reload.

Kevin

I'd take this over to TULT
http://forum.ih8mud.com/chit-chat-se...read-tult.html
to get a better Linux response. I got help with the same problem and better minds than mine will respond to the Ultimate Linux Thread. Also, search through the thread, there were directions on how to "see" your devices and "modprobe" 'em to activate.

more tips:
Include your profile in your backup scheme. On Windows, this will be located at C:\Documents and Settings\username. By default, your MyDocuments lives there and also all your custom settings including any mapped network drives, printers, desktop settings and icons,.....
But, there's a trick to copying it back in.

If a new install/restore, logon as the profile's user and log right back off. This will create the new profile.
Restart the box, logon as a different user(preferablly with admin rights but I don't think its required). The restart is important to make sure the ntuser.dat file isn't opened which will mess up the copy.

Open up My Computer/Tools/FolderOptions/View and choose Show Hidden Files and Folders. Click OK.
Then, copy the 'contents' of the original copy of the profile. Don't copy the folder(just its contents!!) The reason is that you don't want to overwrite the existing(new) user profile folder because there is a SID(security ID) associated with it. You just want the folders and files inside copied inside of the newly created profile.
Once the copy is complete, Restart or Log off and back on as the normal user and you should see all your settings.
This has saved me hours and hours of not listening to users bitch and moan about, "Where's my stuff????" and from not having to manually put everything back.

Hope this is clear enough. If not, let me know.

OPTIONAL: Delete the folder C:\Documents and Settings\user?\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files. If the user spends a lot of time on the internet, this folder will be huge!! This will speed up the copy process.

Also, if your Windows OS crashes and you don't have your stuff backed up, don't worry. Just choose the options to install WINDOWS into a different directory and put a 2(or any other name than WINDOWS)on the end of it 'WINDOWS2', let it install and when its finished, your stuff will still be there. You may have to copy and move somethings but at least its not gone. Provided you have the disk space... Once you get the new install working, you can delete the original WINDOWS folder to free up space.
Can't remember the install steps but DON'T FORMAT or it will be gone and there's no reason for the stuff above.
The C:\Documents and Settings folder will then have a duplicate of all the install-created user accounts like Administrator, All Users,..... the new ones will have something like Administrator.hostname
But, you should be able to see your old profile there which is where your stuff will be(unless you don't save in My Documents or you put My Documents elsewhere)

Hope this helps....

Do you know if you blocked them with AdBlock Plus or NoScript?

I'll bet NoScript. Go to PhotoBucket. In the lower right of FireFox, there's a blue "S" that will sometimes have a red "not allowed" line across it. Click the "S" and you can allow or forbid whatever script you want from each site. In your case, you would "Allow photobucket.com".

Go to "Tools" click "Options"

Go to the "content" tab

The second option down says "load images automatically" on the right you should see something that says "exceptions" click on that. you should see: IH8MUD.com - Home highlight it and on the bottom choose "remove site"

Then you are good to go
